Put your iron hand in a velvet glove.--Napoleon Bonaparte

Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration, the challenging turn-based strategy where diplomacy and economy matter as much as your military power, is now available on GOG.com, for only $5.99

The world is never at peace, although not all wars are fought with guns and cannons. The nations are in constant struggle. Cutthroat economic rivalry, treacherous backstabbing diplomacy, cynical populism, and indoctrination--all this and more signifies an everlasting conflict waged without even a single gunshot. When power is at stake the governments rarely think about such things at ethics, morals or commonwealth. They would say they do, of course, but the reality is easy to observe. Truth be told, it may seem that a simple straightforward war is a much more dignified option. But tell me, what would YOU do for power?

In Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration you become one of the world leaders that struggle for power in domination in the colonial times. The turn-based gameplay allows for careful consideration, as you plan out and execute your diplomatic and economic strategy. Then, when it comes to that, it takes you into the battlefield to directly command your units. You can either play through semi-historical scenarios in Europe, or conquer the procedurally-generated New World, so each game is different from the last one.

Find out if the pen is indeed mightier than the sword, as you challenge the world's greatest powers to a game of influence and domination in Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration, for only $5.99!

Vastly different. And better.
Niceeee, wishlisted for now, due to large backlog tho O-o
I remember hearing about that game. It was massacred by reviews back in the day if I remember well (the main points was the horrible graphics and "being a game for accountants or if you want to fall asleep"). But seeing that many people love it on GOG, it might be interesting to check out.
So this sounds like a cross between Crusader Kings, Civilization and as someone just mentioned above, Colonization. Would that be accurate? I love strategy games and the ones I just listed are favorites of mine. Not sure why I've never really heard of Imperialism till I discovered GOG. Have the first one wishlisted but not seen it on sale yet (or maybe missed when it was) and now the 2nd one is available. I hoped for a strategy bundle over the holidays too but aside from the city builder bundle which i got, one didn't really materialize.

Anyhow, iIf someone has the time or inclination, can you briefly describe which other game this resembles? Reading GOG's description and seeing the screenshots, I'm guessing Civ. Also, which of the 2 Imperialsim games is better if I was to buy one? (I know someone will say get them both but if someone asked me which Civ to get from either Civ 1 or 2, I'd easily say Civ 2 so there has to be some benefits/pluses for one Imperialsim over the other).

Thanks for any info.
Great classic! I played that a lot in my life.

While many aspects are smoother than in the first game of the series and the industrial cycle and number or resources is larger and offers more variety I always felt that the run for the colonies in the new world makes it a bit less balanced and well somehow it was all about gathering enough resources to bit the biggest part from the new world to then defeat all competitors - one way strategy. But it's nevertheless not bad. Should still be fun.
Great Release. Plus 2 (Cultures 1 and 2) and a 1/2 (KB) more strategy realeases this week...just hope that doesn't mean that for the next weeks no more strategies games are coming ;)

In Colonization you fight against european bastards, in Imperialism 2 you are them and fight the indians.

It's quite different. Colonization is kind of Civilization with town management and many single units. Imperialism I would compare more with Total War without the real time fights in a way that you manage provinces and armies and overall industry.
NIce!
