Attacked on Titan.

FLASHBACK™ is now available, only on GOG.com, 10% off until January 3rd.

As resilient as its scientist protagonist, legendary platformer FLASHBACK™ returns in its 25th anniversary with a Modern mode! This optional mode brings a post-FX graphic filter, remastered music and sound, tutorials, and a Rewind function which should make your attempt at escaping Titan slightly easier.

FLASHBACK™ is a timed GOG.com exclusive.

Pond86: You can use RE on it. You have to copy the data folder from Flashback_Data\StreamingAssets as you would do. But RE runs fine with it.

Serren: Thanks.

MarkoH01: I just tried RE but I get an error missage that a SDL2.DLL is missing. Any ideas? (Running Win7/64 bit btw).
avatar
Serren: You need to get the SDL2 library and put it in the same directory as REminiscence.
Yes, I just managed to get it all to work - also figured out how to set the scaler in a way that it does not look like the vaseline filter from the remastered.

Having the option to save manually is a big advantage - a pity that they did not include it in the remaster.
The FX sound a bit different (from both 8bit and 16bit FX in the remastered)
I now noticed that it is fake 16:9 with the blurred sides so no, probably no real 16:9 possible. There does not seem to be the option in RE to make the bars black as they are opposed to be.
RE only offers 4:3 cutscenes (with bars on all sides - however it does not add the annoying "skip" symbol the remastered has).

For blackbars remove the -widescreen part from your command line. There is no true 16:9 as the game was never designed for that.

The sound fx is better I think than the remastered.

Yeah, figured out that much (no real 16:9) when I noticed they just mirrowed parts of the screen to make it look as if it were 16:9. Thank you for telling me how to get black borders.

It's better in case of 8 bit at least. The 16 bit version however also sounds nice. Jave to compare more to be able to say nore.

I'll archive RE (including the amiga music) and put it to my GOG version as bonus. :)

Thank you all for the help.
Please, somebody could say me where's the conrad's shirt color option?

I can't find it!

Thanks in advance!

Start a new game or load a game. When your in control of Conrad, press ESC, and go to game options. You'll see a box called t-shirt color. Tick it for white or untick it for red.
Just noticed another minor difference between RE and the remastered: the aspect ratio seems to be wrong in RE.

at that point, i'm slowly thinking i'd rather like GOG starting to sell emulated AMIGA versions of some old games, to be honest...

They already did, on a very small number of releases so far... but i think thatit is a lead they should try to explore a bit further.... Some games of that era that were on both platforms (pc dos and amiga) were objectively nicer to play and look on the non-PC versions...)
This is easily one of my favorite releases of this year, right up there with the Soldier of Fortune games. :) Merci, GOG, Paul Cuisset, and Microids! Took a little bit to get back in to the swing of things, but now I'm halfway through Death Tower on Expert mode. :) I'll still treasure my big box physical copy, but at least I won't have to put up with that look-up-in-the-manual copy protection.
Also if anyone is interested in another similar game, check out Yahtzee's 1213, a game built in Adventure Game Studio that largely mimics Flashback's gameplay:

Actually, I'm comparing the files in this game to the ones in my original installation. They both have a 'Data' folder with largely the same files. I'd wager all you need is the FB.exe and FB.cfg from the original DOS version and you'd have the same game. I'm sure much of the data is also shared with the Amiga version. I haven't compared the 230+ data files one for one, so I don't know what real differences there may be.

I think Iji deserves a mention too.

An old DOS game called Logan's Fight is also very much like Flashback:

It's the new release that has the wrong aspect ratio. Compare the currently selected item circles in the upper right corners in those two images. The RE version is circular while in the new release it's squashed.
I noticed that, even if you disable the graphics options (Filter, Bloom and Anti-Aliasing) and exit the game, they are reactivated when you enter again, but the options themselves are still marked as not enabled.

Basically, every time I exit and start the game, I have to enable and disable the filters to remove them.

Also, a few times when I continued after dying the game did not respond and had to Alt+F4 the game. I think this happened whenever I pressed "continue" too fast after dying.

And I hate those aliens on Expert. In fact, Expert difficulty is bullshit, with enemies taking forever to die.

Serren: I would be interested to know if this version includes the data files from the original so that you could play it using whatever engine or emulator you want. If not, I would have preferred a straight re-release of the original, even at the same price. Part of what I have a problem with is how they seem to be marketing this as though it were greatly enhanced over the originals. Had they done a proper upscale by redrawing everything, I would have paid a higher price for something like that.

Anyhow, I do hope you enjoy the game.

MarkoH01: As it has been said before (and I just checked it), it is pure Unity only. Therefore all files are encrypted and packed in assets and if it should even be possible to extract those it might be difficult at least to do so. So sorry to tell you that your wish is not coming true (would have been easy to prevent that from GOGs side by simply adding the original as a bonus - would have eliminated the problem of "purists" as well - but they did not).

Thank you - I surely will.
about the "(would have been easy to prevent that from GOGs side by simply adding the original as a bonus - would have eliminated the problem of "purists" as well - but they did not)."

A decent playable demo ( no alpha) is the answer, but they dont do that cause its a lot of work, time consuming , etc etc etc... this might be the reason why many devs use Unity :a click and play and drag and drop a game ...

Because of the demos we had ( in the old days) i bought the Jagged Alliance games, and many other classic old game, playing a decent demo from a cover cd, bought the game at release.

"But you can refund if you do not like the game for whatever reason" , is what everyone says, many times on Steam users say and even devs: "you can refund if you do not like the game"

no you cannot, things you have to do before you can apply for a refund ( anywhere on the net) even on steam ( with all the drm in the games), and i am not buying games to refund them , i buy to keep, but lack of a proper ( no alpha demos) ruins everything.

Anyway thats why i buy games on steam only if i know the dev makes good games, first i buy the game at a huge sales at 70% off :D then if the game is okay i buy the next at 50% off, thats the way,
thats how i got to buy the artifex games almost automatically at release ( 11.99 nowadays cause the price went up)

No offense meant but before writing such a statement have you even:
- have installed and opened Unity?
- have developed a small game using Unity?
- have developed a full game using Unity?

If you did, you would probably revise that judgement...
