Can you see the forest for the trees?

Firewatch, an engrossing first-person mystery about adult relationships under stress, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 10% launch discount.

Isolation. Suffocating temperatures. The impenetrable Wyoming wilderness. It's one of those risky summer days when Henry's firewatch duty seems refreshingly important but a permeating sense of dread hangs in the atmosphere. Against his better judgement, he will soon find himself out into the wild, aiming to investigate a potential threat to the forest. Strange happenings will soon cause him to start questioning everything, including Delilah, his supervisor that accompanies him through this ordeal via a walkie-talkie.

Not unlike its beautiful setting, Firewatch is better experienced than described. This emotionally-charged mystery turns the untamed 1989 Wyoming setting into the perfect stage for an intense, surreal journey of an isolated man that struggles to stay connected with the outside world. The choices you make and the secrets you uncover will feed into Henry's narrative and ultimately determine how this curious story plays out.

Explore the temperamental human nature as revealed during one man's eventful Firewatch duty, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until April 15, 1:59 PM UTC.

CharlesGrey: Any opinions from people who have already tried it?
avatar
shmerl: I've heard good opinions from many people, with only downside that it's rather short.
Games like this, with minimalistic gameplay, always tend to be polarizing. I'll give it some time and wait for some actual useful, unbiased reviews ( and possibly a sale/discount ).

Edit: Also, are people still having these narrow-minded discussions about what does or doesn't qualify as a "game"? Does it matter? Some will enjoy this, some won't, regardless of the term you use to define it.

I took 4.8 hours to finish the story but i've missed a few things(not essential to the main story i guess)i played it a bit in a hurry in some spots.

I would compare it to The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter more than Dear Esther or Gone Home in the sense that most of the exploration you do in the game is with a purpose or objective but you're free to wander around if you want, there's a few extra notes to read around for background and a few choices in dialogue although i don't think they matter much to the end result they provide some variety i guess.

A lot of people complained about the ending but i actually liked it,it stays within the realistic situation established within the game at least for me :)

Saladien: Dust? What dust?
I guess they meant they want to deal with release through other distributors first (PS4 store and Steam). And only then release on GOG. Yeah, it's annoying for us, GOG users who are left last.

Saladien: Now im hesitant to buy the Game. (Linux Version) Im really hoping gog gets galaxy ready soon.
Could you please tell me if its running well? I dont trust gogs Quality Control(most games have missing dependencies etc).
The game is actually 64 bit (thanks Campo Santo!), so disregard the above. I'm testing it now.

UPDATE:

Launched very nicely on my Debian testing. So far no crashes or anything. I didn't get far yet though.

Good stuff. I didn't know - I was just wishing generically that all games were either 64-bit or both.

What version of Unity is it using? Is there any way to check it? I don't see version shown in the game log.

I think this is a decent review to give an idea if you'll like it (might have spoilers). They also fight over what a "game" is.

Previously Recorded - Firewatch

For those who own it, how "patched up" is this GOG version? I tried the Steam version on a friend's, and it had a number of issues from 99% GPU usage when idle & minimised (ramping up fans) to multiple random crashes. The game itself wasn't bad at all, but last time I looked it "needed work" on the technical side.

Crosmando: It's a shame because I'm always thought a strategy game about fighting fires would be a great concept.

muntdefems: This is *exactly* what I thought Firewatch was about the first time I heard about it. Really hope someday there's a game like this.

In the meantime, I'll gladly simulate my walking with Firewatch (whenever I clear my backlog a bit, that is :S)
Imagine an isometric base-building RTS game about fire-fighting, building fire-engines, going to lakes to fill up water, using planes and helicopters to drop water on the fire, protecting towns from being destroyed, evacuating civilians. Would be great.
I like the woods. I have visited a number of fire towers, both in commission (and occasionally in emergency mode) and no longer so. I wanted this as soon as I heard about it.

Thanks to GOG and Campo Santo for bringing it here.

GPU utilization - ~40% when minimized (ultra settings). Nvidia GTX 680, Linux x86_64. No crashes so far.

Hmmm I am not sure at the level of patching but, IIRC, we did send some reports about some issues for the game. Sorry for not being definitive but this one is not one of my games so I don't have all the nitty gritty details :)

You can be assured we wouldn't have released it if we did not think it was up to par :)

Crosmando: No actually, I'm just sick and tired of all the "emotional narrative-driven experiences" as an excuse for having virtually non-existent core gameplay.
I'm not. I've actually spent the last few years playing stuff like HotS, Theme Hospital, Jagged Alliance, Blood, Solaris 1.0.4, TIS-100... Hilariously enough - I DID pay attention to the stories in all of them. Either way - I could use something different, because my tastes are many. I'm a sucker for a good story.

I understand that you don't like this, but such a game's existence doesn't suddenly mean the death of another game that could've taken its place. This is not a zero-sum game. You can probably find something to accommodate your tastes, and other people may enjoy this. These things are not mutually exclusive. The industry is big enough to handle it.

Crosmando: MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE GAMERS SUCH AS MYSELF
Level 0: kids not being mature
Level 1: teenagers desperately proving that they are mature
Level 2: people transcending the concept of maturity and ridiculing it (you are here)
Level 3: people no longer feeling the need to ridicule the concept and willing to explore it (I am here)

Not that this really matters. This also happens to be similar to my "stupid theist < stupid atheist < smart theist < smart atheist < ..." meta-level tower. I haven't figured out a better way to put this, and it seems that merely trying to stay one meta-step ahead of the curve is fairly short-sighted, since people can always climb above you...

Either way - I stay open-minded. Who knows - I might even enjoy Gone Home once I get around to playing it. It might be trendy to hate certain things, but I've never really given a damn about making a freak out of myself, so I'd rather form an informed opinion than preemptively give up on something...

tl;dr: Dislike it all you want; some people may enjoy what you find boring. There's nothing wrong with that. Leave them be.

Also, what's "mature"? I understand mature story as well written, more leaning towards realism (not in a sense of avoiding fantasy or science fiction, but in a sense of using literary realism concepts, such as imperfect characters, less cliches and etc.).
