There are great FPS games, and there are amazing horror titles. But there is also F.E.A.R 3 - combining the very best of both of these worlds. And now it is available on GOG with a -75% Winter Sale discount!

F.E.A.R. is an absolutely iconic first-person shooter psychological horror video game series which started back in 2005 and consists of three main titles. We are incredibly happy that during our Winter Sale, the third entry in the series is joining its predecessor and can complete the gaming library of every fan of the series.

And that’s not the end of great news. If you haven’t played previous F.E.A.R. titles now is the best time to do so, because F.E.A.R. Platinum (containing original 2005’s F.E.A.R. and its two addons: Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate) is on a -85% Winter Sale discount, and F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin + Reborn is on a -75% Winter Sale discount. All of the mentioned offers last until January 2nd, 11 PM UTC.

But for today, let’s focus on F.E.A.R 3 as it delivers all the hallmarks that define the F.E.A.R. brand: terrifying paranormal experience, frenetic combat and a dramatic storyline.

The game takes place nine months after the conclusion of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, with Alma Wade's (psychic main antagonist in the previous entries and a mascot of the whole series) pregnancy nearing its end. When a resurrected Paxton Fettel rescues Point Man from captivity by Armacham Technology Corporation (ATC) in a Brazilian prison, the two distrustful brothers head back to Fairport. Point Man plans to save the still-missing Jin Sun-Kwon and prevent Alma giving birth. Fettel, however, has an entirely different motive. Meanwhile, a new threat emerges, one of which even Alma herself is terrified.

One thing that makes F.E.A.R 3 unique is the gameplay differences depending on which character we control, allowing the players for two totally different experiences. When playing as Point Man, the player's arsenal includes a wide variety of firearms, as well as three different types of projectile - frag grenades, flash bangs, and zap grenades, and a knife for hand-to-hand combat with ability to perform a silent insta-kill if we manage to sneak up on the enemy without being seen. Point Man also has several melee attacks, such as a punch, a jumping kick, and a sliding kick. However, the most prominent element of Point Man’s gameplay is his reflex time, a superhuman reflex ability which slows down the world around him while still allowing to aim and react at normal speed.

When playing as Fettel on the other hand, while he himself does not use any firearms, we gain access to his possession ability, which allows to take control of an enemy and gain access to any abilities and weapons wielded by that individual. Additionally, although Fettel cannot carry any weapons in his normal form, he does have psychic combat abilities like bolts of psychic energy, telekinesis to lift and throw objects, and concussive blast. But if that’s not enough, we can always just punch enemies to death, or crush their heads with Fettel’s bear hands (if we can successfully sneak up on them).

Besides awesome gameplay F.E.A.R 3 has a greater focus on story, better visuals, and a more thrilling execution than the series has ever seen. It also doesn’t shy from providing us with a hair-rising atmosphere. We don’t really want to spoil you the fun of playing through it, but it’s safe to say that while playing this title you will never know what is going to happen next, or when it is going to happen, and the idea of unbelievably terrifying force with ominous presence that lingers in the air will not easily leave for mind. And it was possible thanks to the guidance of legendary film director John Carpenter and writer Steve Niles. These masters of horror provided their expertise to take F.E.A.R 3’s intensity to the next level. Niles co-wrote the twisted storyline that reveals the motivations and family dynamics of the main characters, and Carpenter helped craft the cinematics for maximum storytelling and fright factor.

There’s so much to say about this iconic FPS that we could go on even longer. But in all honesty, no amount of words will replace the incredible gaming experience provided by simply playing it. And with a -75% Winter Sale discount, the best time to do so is now.

And if you’d like to join us during our special GOG F.E.A.R. 3 stream, feel free to do so on Tuesday, December 20th, at 12 PM UTC, HERE.
Thanks for the game! I'm a sucker for completionism so I already bought it.

I understand this is not so good as the first game, but then the second game wasn't that good, either and yet I enjoyed it (despite that hideous HUD).

And I'm single-player only so I'm OK with that. Let's see how it turns out. Meanwhile, collection complete!

Niggles: Interesting. This is one of the few game series i ever completed. Found 1 and 3 to be better than 2 for some reason....
Can't read your mind but I think most of the hate for FEAR 2 at the time came from it being VERY Xbox 360 despite being a sequel to a game that was VERY pc gaming, if that makes sense. I was mad too.

Playing it years later with different expectations I found it very enjoyable.

Honestly, as I said it in my previous answer, what I truly hated with all my heart was that atrocious HUD, totally unnecessary for a PC game.
I played through this game on STEAM twice, once single player, once in coop. I might have bought it here, if coop were working. But with the coop-focus of this game and its generally lower quality, I'm not interested in just getting it for the single player again. Maybe you can get coop to work later down the line?
I knew we were missing a Fear game so good to see it here.

StingingVelvet: This game is pretty bad IMO. I mean it's playable, shooty shooty bang bang, but it's very bland with some annoying mechanics and a disconnected story. I replayed it two or three years ago and felt it was just kinda there. Not awful, not good, just meh.

I think FEAR 2 is actually pretty underrated, in contrast.
Agreed. FEAR 3 is less scary, felt like it went down the COD type of route, and is nothing special.

FEAR 1: Complete is great; and FEAR 2: Complete is also pretty good.

mqstout: Yes! Here I am, still LAN playing Duke3d co-op, or UT team vs bots with my husband here and there, 20-25 years after release.
avatar
Syphon72: We are the minority, my friend. I played LAN with my wife on many old games and got her into RTS. haha The developers feel its wast of time giving us LAN. :(

wolfsite: From the card:

Please note that this DRM-Free version of F.E.A.R. 3 is single-player only. Multiplayer and co-op modes as well as related in-game challenges are not available.

Honestly I am glad to have this here DRM free in some form.

Syphon72: This is one games that would not work when I tried removing steam from it. Nice to play it DRM free.
See, that's the thing - everything is so built around company-owned central severs - that when the company pulls the plug, the game's basically dead.

I hate seeing all this work the techs, graphics artists, sound artists, and everybody else that made this artistic game...just go away b/c a company pulled the plug. Especially w/ COD games, since those come out yearly; it's a shame.

It feels like all this time these dev's crunch, work hard, and whatnot for, for modern-day multiplayer game - yeah, it won't last for super-long, in many instances. And to me, that's sad.

Unless someone goes it and reverse-engineers the game to support LAN/TCP-IP/P2P - the game goes the way of the dodo. Even in the old days, games like Battlefield 1942 were smart, even if they were still MP-focused - they still could be played offline w/ bots and in those MP-style skirmish modes. I wish a lot of games would do that.

I'm probably gonna be so upset, when something like The Secret World gets pulled....b/c it feels like this game could've been an offline single-player game, in many ways. I wish more games would have bots and stuff on the MMO side - and once the MMO's lacking players, re-work it to work offline.

Man, I probably would've loved an offline-rework of Tabula Rasa.

I wish dev's and pub's would add official LAN/TCP-IP/P2P type methods to their games, when they decide to pull a plug. Let the community keep the game going.

FEAR 3's half of a game now...b/c there's LAN/TCP-IP for its MP - and that's a shame, that it's MP lacks all of that support; and/or never got bot support to work offline.

And dev's wonder I don't do MP like I used to anymore? Yeah, b/c they're treated like rentals w/ central servers that only last for a few years to months...and then they're gone.
F.E.A.R. 3 is crashing all the time after the splash screen though it worked and played fine the first time I launched it. Tried every fix mentioned on PCGamingWiki. Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Old Steam solution: Force it to run in DX9 Mode.

See this thread -> https://steamcommunity.com/app/21100/discussions/0/648811126414283896/

Gamers need to remember this: when running older games, they ain't gonna always run well on modern Windows-based DX10-12 based systems, hardware and/or software-wise - stuff can STILL go wrong.

If DX9 mode on modern Windows (W10 and W11) for some reason STILL don't work properly (which still could happen, BTW) - you'll need a DX-Wrapper or emulator like DXWnd, DGVoodoo2, DXVK, or something of that sort.

My dude. I'm well aware of this. As I have said: I tried every fix available, to no avail.

Did you try DXVK? DGVoodoo2? DXWnd?
Those are your next options, if DX9 ain't doing it.

You might, at this point, need a DX wrapper - to convert DX10-12 calls into DX9 calls.

EDIT - If you need some DX10-12 wrappers to convert to DX9 calls...
DGVoodoo 2 - http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/
DXVK - https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases/tag/v2.0
DXWnd - https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

Try one, see what works. [shrug]
Good luck.

Sorry, can't help other than suggesting checking the game forum (clicking "community" at the top, and searching "fear" in bottom left bar), but I don't think there's any info there; and/or requesting a refund if need be.

I'm with you. The first game is great, the second one bad and the third possibly even worse. The only saving grace is that the singleplayer mode is all of five hours long or so.

Still, I'm down with the series being completed and the rest of the community making their own mind how they feel about the games.

Then it goes without saying that no one can offer you any assistance, as you have already tried every fix available.
