vicklemos: Has anyone tried GOG linux games on this beauty?
Do those games run on ARM processors?
avatar
JMich: so you'll need to run them through Wine (or another emulator).
Probably a full emulator. Bochs perhaps. But full emulation is slow and cumbersome.

You got me there, man. Do they!? :P
I know that GOG games do run on some tablets and stuff, windows pro ones, I guess...

I wonder if someone will be able to build a mini GOG desktop someday! :P
Wish I could do that. Hummm :)

Don't know about a GOG desktop (It would be a good idea to have a little box for all the good old games so as to not use the desktop computer) but a MAME Box will be something i'll try this summer. I wanted to make one for some time and i think this is the perfect time to do it. If it isn't any good, i'll just use the Pi for camera surveillance. ;-)

Nice one, pal. I know a ton of people who had a similar idea in mind and, sadly, let the whole thing unfinished. Cool summer project. Good luck to ya!
Please, please create (with pics) a thread and update it, willya? :P

Hm, that's a nice idea. When i'll get my hands dirty, i'll make sure to post all the delicious details! ;-)
Hey guys, I don't know much about these Raspberry Pis but would they be good to build my parents a basic computer? Any recommended kits for this?

They just do stuff like browse Facebook and whatnot, so it isn't too demanding.

I'd say it would be perfect for such tasks. Writing documents, checking email, watching videos, etc.

Thanks man. Looking up kits right now. It's so cheap too. This is great.

Hopefully I can get my parents to enjoy using a linux distribution though. I'd have to get familiar with it again as well.

hummer010: I love that you keep telling us that this unreleased piece of software is better.

Hey, Half-life 3 is so much better than Half-life 2.
Anyone remembers Windows Cairo?

IBM said "Hey, everyone, look what our new version of OS/2 can do!"
Microsoft would reply "Pfff! Windows Cairo will do that even better, and so much more! Just you wait..."

People eagerly awaited the next super version of Windows that was always just around the corner.
Noone bought the capable OS/2 that was available, and Windows Cairo never shipped. Thus, everyone but Miscrosoft lost.
I haven't had a good reason to buy a Pi yet mainly because I have too many PC's at home, this upgrade is about to change my mind though. If it can run a full Linux distro with a lightweight Desktop Environment it would be perfect.

Short of emulation or source ports, no. They're all x86 or x86_64 binaries. GOG only supports Windows (at most XP to 8.1, fewer for some games - not Windows RT, which is the ARM port of Windows 8/8.1), OS X (last few versions, all of which only run on x86 and x86_64 - not iOS, which is the closest to an OS X for ARM, but too different to be viable), as well as Linux Mint and Ubuntu Linux (both of which only support x86 and x86_64 - simply dubbed "32-bit" respectively "64-bit" for both distributions, even if Ubuntu Phone and Tablet might expand into ARM the desktop edition hasn't bothered with anything beyond x86-based CPUs since... well, ever, I believe).

AndrewC: Regarding all the talk about Windows 10 on the Pi 2, I'm willing to bet good money that this will be stripped down version similar to Server Core for developing IoT applications on the newly multi-platform .Net stack. So don't expect to be able to install most applications nor to have it look similar to the regular Windows 10. It'll most likely just drop you into a powershell prompt at boot and that's about it.

As for the hardware itself, it's pretty nice, but considering that I already have a model B which sits unused I don't think I'll be picking this up quite yet, except if they manage to make the Plex server run on the Pi 2.
Yep, it is Windows IoT. There is also a sign up page for development hardware / software and all that.
These always looked cool, I'd want one just to play with. Might pick one up when there are full kits you can buy for 2 as I don't see any yet. I'd want mine in a case and stuff for sure.

jdsgn: Because I didn't know. Always thought MSW was x86 only.

JMich: See post 20. Windows on ARM devices is almost old enough to vote.
Yep, seen it already. Can you comment on the quality of MSW ARM releases?
Yep
