Hey all

I am trying to find a book for someone it's the Dutch translation of George Orwells 1984. However, they are few and far between on UK sites and a don't yet speak enough Dutch to search properly.

As far as online services go where do you look at ordering your books from? I'm aware of Bol.com and the equivalent of eBay (market place thing)

As long as it's good condition a second hand store is ok. There are just the main criteria of it must be in Dutch, ideally hardback, good condition and a sensible price.

I add that last one cause I did find a copy for 12 euro but to post it still within Holland they wanted 25 euros shipping.

While technically it is the netherlands that name was not given to the Dutch people by themselves. I know a good number of Dutchies and none of them would ever say they are from the netherlands. That name was given to them by other people.

I have yet to meet anyone that would say they are from the Netherlands over Holland.

Don't worry about that.
My great grandfather was from Amsterdam and the whole side of my dad's family refer to ourselves as Dutch, and not once have I ever heard any of them say "Netherlands". In fact they live in a 'Dutch Community' and they put the name Holland on everything they can. :P

yup, I have had the lecture about "we are not the Netherlands" and its basically the same for a few places, Spain and the Catalan region for example (different reasons for it of course)

I've never met anyone who said "Netherlands" either. It's just that your thread title reminded me of this video.

I guess the "England" disease we Germans are suffering from is worse. Everyone who's from Great Britain is from England.

German guy: "Where are you from"
Scotsman: "Glasgow."
German Guy: "Oh, you're from England!"
...i hate the misnomer holland
lets leave it at that

What follows that was likely censored but ended with a night in the cells and someone a trip to Accident and Emergency

Does your business keep hookers on display the way they do in Amsterdam? To honor your heritage, I mean.

the largest provinces of the netherlands are north and south holland
but i loath the idea that the whole country is lumped under those two

i wont bore you with the history of the netherlands

i blame this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_of_Holland

My father is Dutch, my mother isn't, and my mother is the boss.

Or maybe it's comparable to us Germans all being Bavarian the further you move away from Germany. ;)

I'd assume it comes down to where your friends originate from. If they're from North or South Holland (and a lot of Dutch are), or if they live(d) close and sympathise with these regions, they're probably more likely to object to the "Netherlands", but if they're from Zeeland or any other region they're proud of, they're more likely to be insulted by the misnomer "Holland".
