Wow, it's been exactly nine months. The first page of the thread aged well.

SmollestLight: Here's the official statement from the game's publisher:
Developed by the award-winning id Software, Quake® is the ground-breaking, original dark fantasy first-person shooter that inspires today’s retro-style FPS games. Now, experience the authentic, updated, and visually enhanced version of the original. The GOG version of the update is currently being finalised and will be available to new and existing customers soon.
Umm - is "soon" nearly here yet?

Who3D: I see Bethesda have a sale on here but have not even updated Quake yet. Pass.
Have any of the Source Ports been updated to handle any of the Quake 1 extra-content in the Steam-version and Epic versions yet?

Basically, if they don't support them already, the Quake 1 Source Ports would need to support these new Q1 Enhanced features:
-> Honey
-> Quake 64
-> MachineGames' new single player episode: Dimensions of the Machine.
-> Underdark Overbright & Copper
-> Terra
-> The Punishment Due
-> Support MP for say GOG Galaxy.

With the exception of the enhanced version's multiplayer, a recent update to Quakespasm & VkQuake (A vulkan version of Quakespasm) now has support for the Enhanced Edition version add-ons. I've played through all of the add-ons so far in VkQuake without an issue.
And fellow Mac gamers can enjoy the new content if they own Quake Enhanced on Steam. I put together a guide on how to get started with QuakeSpasm and vkQuake (using SteamCMD, so you won't need to install Steam app): https://github.com/boggydigital/mac-gaming-guides/blob/main/games/quake.md

Awesome news. I'll have to check out the updated Source Port of VKQuake.

Ironwail also has support for the Quake Enhanced version since some time now.

Thanks for the update. Just tested Dimensions of the Machine with both and it seems to work perfectly. For me that removes the last reason to not simply keep using vkQuake / Quakespasm rather than rely on the "official" Enhanced version.

I see the thread has an annual anniversary coming up (without the promised Quake Enhanced appearing in store). I'm not good at social stuff to be honest, but I'm wondering if we should hold some kind of event for the thread's birthday?

Definitely doesn't fit in with my definition of soon.
And while it has been rejected by some as not really an official statement, GOG have never admitted that.

One would have to speculate, that if it isn't here yet, then it is unlikely to come here any time soon, if ever.

On Steam there have been three updates since it was released, adding improvements and bonuses etc.

And currently it is on sale again at Epic for 40% off. The price for me is $5.98 AUD, which is somewhat tempting after this length of disappointment. I'm not keen on any DRM it might have, but supposedly only certain aspects have DRM.

But who knows, maybe it is more popular than they thought it would be, and so they are just milking it for as long as possible, and it will eventually turn up here.

Perhaps it will turn up here as an anniversary gift. One can always dream.
It does fit with the definition of Soon™, though.
While this treatment certainly sucks on principle alone, I can't say I miss enhanced edition itself. It's good for the added content (PAKs) to check out casually, however it is the same strategy that beamdog is pulling with NWN EE, i.e. "if you are buddies with us, your mod can become official content exclusively offered along the great ones from the 90s-00s". Running Quake in kex is like running duke3d in unreal. Something just feels odd about it. Some of the higher-poly models are ok, some look weird. New lighting gives the game quite a different look overall.

Steam users at last got the NiN soundtrack with that version and the crossplay mp sounded neat at first, until the rather amusing notice that it's just the "special couch league" aka gamepad-only mp tier. I don't think that I'll lose any sleep over this version.

From a universe point of view our sun will go out "soon" and our lives are a brief moment in time.
Yes us humans have our moment in time all too soon.

It would be nice before mine is over, if I could get Quake Enhanced at GOG. Hell, even though I have bought Quake here at GOG and previously on disc, I'd be happy to pay a bit more for it ... DRM-Free.

It would be nice to get the update for free, but what's a few dollars more when I consider what I've spent on Quake over the years ... all the mission packs, official and otherwise, N64 version, Guide Book, and the many hours I have spent finding and collecting levels and packs online to download, or on magazine discs. I've even played around with creating Quake levels, and collected everything I had onto one CD, with menus I designed myself to play or install maps etc. Yes, I was quite Quake obsessed at one point in my life, for a few years ... and I still admit to it being my favorite game. I had a bunch of key bindings too, to do specific things to enhance my Quake experience.
