Get your gory kicks, like it's 1996!

STRAFE®, a fast-paced, roguelike first-person shooter with plenty of guts, gusto, and gung-ho attitude, is now available for pre-order, DRM-free on GOG.com!

The monsters are charging you in droves, your weapons are becoming more and more ridiculous, and the levels rearrange themselves every time you die. Or maybe not - it's hard to tell when there's so much blood spatter in your eyes. But who needs a map, when you've got wicked instincts and insane mobility?

Watch the trailer.

"... and rupturing your internal organs"

Ah, not my organs! I need those, man.
The game looks insane. I will definitely grab this one.

Wishbone: Why is this a pre-order? What's the point?
avatar
Windforce: The release date is wrong. The game will be available at the 9. Mai 2017 and GOG customers don't get the pre order DLC. The pre order dlc is only for steam customers.
That did not address my question in any way, shape or form ;-)

The point of pre-orders is to lock in sales that would otherwise go to other places offering pre-orders. Usually the point to the customer is to pay less than they'd pay on release day, or to get bonuses that are only available in a pre-order. I don't know what the incentive for the customer is here. In any case, GOG still has the incentive to lock in whatever pre-order sales they can pick up.
What are the system requirements for this game? On the game card it just says: "Windows 7 or later."

justanoldgamer: I've seen that gameplay and graphic, or something very similar, somewhere before. Was there a demo?
There was a demo on their website, not sure if it still exist.

nightcraw1er.488: What is with the "procedurally generated" nowadays, does no-one have the time to design and build actual levels (yep looking at you Shadow Warrior 2)? This and the fact it looks "minecraft"y put me off straightaway.

wvpr: Replayability, unpredictability. Done poorly, it's barren and repetitive. Done well, it extends gameplay far beyond what you can get from playing the same map over and over.
I must have been unlucky then as not seen a randomised level system thats anything other than rubbish. Even SW2 as I mentioned started to feel like I was just repeating the same thing over an over. Not saying games with fixed maps are better in all cases, but take for instance DA:Origins - great maps, lots of interest, very little repetition, compare this to DA2 which has 2 maps you constantly walk back and forward over. Same with randomised maps, once you have seen the few building blocks, then its all the same.

Breja: This. Also, I don't remember the minecraft look and randomly generated levels to be the staples of FPS genre in the 90s, so the old-school nostalgia marketing is really confusing to me. It's like they don't really know which indie bandwagon they want to jump on.
But they didn't mention crafting...missed bandwagon right there.

Sorry about that, the mention of the pre-order DLC is there on the game card. Thanks for pointing this out.
:) Looks nice.

Btw, am I the only one who thinks that whenever a new game is released, GOG web admins copy paste a previous game for the game page and often forget to edit the system requirements part.

Like this game. Its system requirements section is removed now.
I do like the look of this, but pre-order in-game items put me off a lot. It smacks of the worst marketing techniques, and makes anyone coming along later feel like they'll have missed out.
With with that price? Why not 18,89€?

I was curious about it and just waited for the technical hiccups to be fixed but I guess I'll just postpone indefinitely for now...

It's a design decision, like 2D/3D or real-tim/turn-based.

Besides it's not as easy as you seem to put it, at least to do it correctly.

On the other hand, the levels in Shadow Warrior 1 were "actual levels" (hand-designed) - and they were boring linear affairs and arenas. The design of them didn't seem any better than a random connection to me, and it was often frustrating (some factory level that had me tearing my hair out; getting lost in a maze of bamboo).

SW 1 was far and away the better game though, linear yes, does that matter in a shooter? Cod is almost on rails linear and that's one the biggest sellers. Sw2 just felt like one of two options repeated over and over, so that blue neon wall had a telly on it last time round, that's not added anything to the experience. Its true also that sw1 had a great story and the linearity pushed that along nicely. Sw2 didn't have a story, it was goto with swampy randomised map and kill something, then to neon cut and kill something until bored.

Well, I'd never play a COD game, so you're right, for many people it wouldn't matter! And it depends on what you count as a shooter. If it means the one and only thing you do is shoot, then I'll probably always dislike those games. But games which are first-person and have a lot of shooting, but which never felt linear to me, might include Deus Ex, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, System Shock 2, Fallout 3.

By the way, I'm not defending SW2. I haven't played it and had no interest in it.

It just shows we all like different things. I thought the SWremake story was paper-thin, mostly irrelevant, unaffected by my actions, and cliched. Just an excuse for arena battles and collecting keycards to open doors (except they were shrines, but it was basically Doom). :-)

Don't forget the pre-order exclusive content... Just like the good ol' days right?

In most cases it is a bad design decision, even when it's done well, procedural generation in a genre like this is still inferior to properly planned, hand crafted levels.

I prefer to buy the games I want on release date or afterwards, never pre-order. This time I'm drawn into pre ordering it because of the extra weapon which I personally don't feel as necessary to me, but I don't want to feel I've bought a game near-complete. Is the extra weapon still available as a regular pick up for non-preorder buyers or is strictly available for preorder buyers?
