Let’s hear it folks. At what times did you thoroughly enjoy instalments of established brand games that were not made by their original creators – or with infinitisimally minimal involvement? I can think of a few. And I guess the Tomb Raider fans can think of a whole lot.

Most absurd/nerdy and/or otherwise most striking answer "solves the problem" and supplier gets five rep points on January 31st.

I’ll kick it off with two Telltale Seasons… I’m uncertain whether any developer has been accused as much of leeching off licenses that aren’t their own.

Tales of Monkey Island
Yes, there was Dave Grossman on board, and there’s one hefty bow to the genius of Ron Gilbert. It’s clear enough that fully acknowledge that Monkey Island was mostly Ron Gilbert's brainchild. But Gilbert wasn’t involved in ToMI. Tim Schafer wasn’t involved. This was basically sacrilege. The writers had mostly zip to do with the original Monkey Island games (and, at least in one prominent case, were neither very comfortable with designing adventure game puzzles nor liked it at all). It’s still an adventure game that I go back to, one that delivered original ideas in an established franchise, new iconic characters and new iconic dialog. It was by all means a far worthier instalment to the series than its fourth, though that bar was rather low set.

Sam & Max Season 3
Arguably Telltale’s finest hour, yet the involvement of Steve Purcell has visibly decreased from Season to Season. There’s not much evidence that he was involved in Season 3 at all beyond the design of the final cover – and even that was an afterthought that only emerged months after the last episode hit. In fact, it was designed for the Telltale store DVD slip cover. Telltale had wholly absorbed the franchise and at this point had created more content for the franchise than had previously existed. The original creator went on to co-direct Pixar’s "Brave" movie – not much time for his old heroes, anyway.

(There are of course far more examples outside the realm of video games where narrative franchises have continued or were rebooted without the original creator(s) involved and still produced great results, maybe even far better than the original. For example, I despise the German author Wolfgang Hohlbein, but am in absolute awe over the "Chronicles of the Immortals" comics that Thomas von Kummant and Benjamin von Eckartsberg have created based on his shitty books. In their art book they describe in no uncertain terms that Hohlbein’s involvement was practically non-existant)

Vainamoinen: Tales of Monkey Island
I liked Tales a lot, and Curse of Monkey Island is my favourite of the entire series. So the idea of Gilbert getting the series back and whiping the slate clean of everything after 2 that floated around a few years back sounded horrible to me, and I'm glad it never happened.

Arguably Telltale’s finest hour
Very arguably :P Frankly, I considered season 3 to be a letdown after season 2 which I liked much better.

Then again I'm not on the "hate the current interactive movie-like telltale games" bandwagon. I love Tales from the Borderlands fiercly. Which, by the way, probably also fits this thread, since I don't think any of the creators of the FPS Borderlands had much to do with that one.
Knights of the Old Republic II. Despite the fact that it was rushed and the Restored Content mod is definitely needed, I enjoyed it more than I. Similarly, I thought Neverwinter Nights 2 (and particularly Mask of the Betrayer) was an improvement over 1. In fact, I wish Obsidian could take over some more Bioware games, given that they've been going down the drain lately ...

I agree, and the Restored Content mode isn't a biggie. It's easy enough to get and install, so we aren't talking about terminal bugs here. I love them both, but the characters in #2 are just so much more fun, save for the male Jedi dude who I only use in order to turn Dark, which is actually a pain in the ass. He's so.....Nice. ECK!

SaGa 3 (Final Fantasy Legend 3 in the US). This game, while produced by the same company that made the other SaGa games (Squaresoft/Square/Square Enix), it was not made by the same producer, and it shows in that the game is quite different; in particular it has experience points (something other SaGa games do not, despite also being RPGs). It did take a long time for the game to really grow on me (by long, I mean like a couple decades), but I have been able to appreciate the game in recent years.

With that said, the game actually did get remade in Japan, with the series director in charge, and the remake, as a result, is drastically different from the original. I have actually played the remake (imported it from Japan), and found it also fun to play (though it differs from the original enough to not obsolete it); my one complaint are the visible enemies that move in real-time, which gets worse than the random invisible encounters of the original by the end of the game.

(On the other hand, when the Final Fantasy series changed directors with its 6th installment, I found I stopped liking the series as muchl my favorite FF game is Final Fantasy 5.)

Bit discriminatory that.

I don't keep track who are the "creators" of games I enjoy, so frankly I don't even know for sure which sequels are made by a different team, or whatever.

For instance, I did read somewhere that the "Legends of Aranna" expansion to Dungeon Siege was made by a different team than the DS base game... but I really couldn't tell the difference. The gameplay/graphics/whatever were almost exactly the same as in the base game, more of the same basically.

Was Far Cry 2 made by a different dev team as Far Cry 1? If so, then that is one. I liked both games, but for different reasons. For me Far Cry 2 was more like a "GTA-clone in Africa, in the first person view", while Far Cry 1 was a more generic FPS game, but with lots of options to semi-freely roam around.
I liked Fallout 3, NV and 4. I prefer them to Fallout 1 and 2.
Fallout 3 is my favourite in the series

Uh oh :O That's a pretty dangerous thing to say on GOG's forums.

ps. Fallout 3 is my favourite too. Then comes 2, New Vegas, 1 and finally 4, which I didn't even finish (it's just too boring). 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas are all really good games. Fallout 4 is just too... big!? Craft this, build that, manage crap you don't care for... The game's so busy distracting you from itself that you totally miss the point of the game.

My ranking would be: 3>1>NV>4>2 (I really didn't like this, sorry)
