A friend of mine stopped me buying more games . She told me " first finish all the games that are on your backlog "
I've been having a strange game-rebuying craving lately.

Basically, since I've moved to Galaxy from Steam, I've been rebuying games I already have. Even though they were mostly cheap games (like the Thief games and all the Legacy of Kain games for like 6€), I still can't beat the feeling of guilt because I already own the damn thing. But the DRM-free allure has gotten to me. Any ideas on how to cull this? I thought Galaxy would HELP with this, but it's only made it worse.

I have been "good" as far as my backlog goes. I stopped installing 12 games at once and now I just have the one game I'm working on and moving forward. I will break this rule only if I'm playing a huge, long or open-world game (a la Far Cry, any Elder Scrollsg game, Dark Souls etc.) and install another, more bitesized game (for example, right now I have Jedi Fallen Order along with COD4) for when I don't have hours to sink into gaming.

Nope. I've bought a NAS where I can backup my GOG library. So don't come asking for help from me :D

Sorry for necroing this but this topic deserves a lot more praise imho!! ;)
So does Game Pass count? ;) I like being being able to try new titles before buying (plus they have the Elder Scrolls trilogy).

Right now, my biggest limitation is an internet connection that drops in and out. No MMOs for me.

I have many games on multiple platforms, some of which I haven't even started. Finished the demo of Colossal Cave today; nice to see a classic updated for modern audiences.* (The only drawback: no Linux version!)

*Meaning, full 3D graphics, WASD controls, etc.

Anyway. Watching media critique helps me realize the flaw in modern media: It's just one action blockbuster after another. So I'm not as excited for new games.

One thing I enjoy doing is writing character journals, using what happens in-game as a jumping-off point. Should really get back to that... Anyhow, I'll keep an eye on this thread.

What's that? Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind? Ah, it's great to live in 2002!
This is a necro I can respect. I remember this thread. Actually a good topic :)

Anyway, I was clean for a few weeks, no games purchased.. then while heavily sedated by alcohol on friday, I bought Alice: Madness Returns for about $1,5 on Xbox. I even have it on disc. A straight up convenience purchase to have it digital. This is everything wrong with society.

They mean Redguard, Battlespire, and The Elder Scrolls Travels, obviously. A discerning choice. :D

Hate to disappoint, but I was referring to Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

But they're not a "trilogy".
Interesting subject. Buying many games not only makes you anxious about "When am I going to find the time to play them all?", but also prevents you from potentially wanting to replay a game you've previously finished! And as one grows older, his/her real life obligations do increase.

Personally, since mid-'22 I've gotten into the habit of replaying some of my old games (those that I really want to see their plots again) and I certainly decreased the rate with which I get new ones (buying or in giveaways). The last I bought was Titan Quest, around June '23.

Right now I have I total of 132 games I want to play, either for the first time or replaying. So, I really decided from now on to pay for games only in the Secret Santa events, and I expect this to last at least until 2026 (I finish 30-35 games a year at the most). And each time I will be putting in the wishlist 10 games at the most, in order to not overly excess the number of owned games.

I have the same "problem", especially as I realized how many months I had played e.g. Jedi Knight + Mysteries of the Sith expansion, or Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (which I just finished yesterday), before actually finishing them.

My backlog is much bigger than yours, I have 2493 games on GOG alone (no I am not expecting to play even half of them at least to completion, but still), and also hundreds of games on Steam etc... and sometimes I get an urge to play some older console games on emulators or stuff, like now I have this feeling should I play all Zelda games (maybe not the Gameboy versions, too crude) as I'd like to buy the two newest Zelda games for my Nintendo Switch...

Also it is a bit of a problem that most of my gaming time still goes to Team Fortress 2 (an online shooter), and playing my backlog of single-player games comes after that. Sometimes I kinda wish Valve would just shut down TF2 so I'd use my gaming time to single-player games only. This is the same reason I never tried out World of Warcraft, I was afraid it would eat too much of my time. It is a good thing it actually cost money so that was an easy decision to me as I don't want to pay monthly, or any, fees for online multiplayer games (TF2 is free to play, I have used a total 0,30 euros to it during all these years, just to get an expanded inventory).

Another problem is that I many times feel my "duty" is to finish the games too, but sometimes I decide not to, if I just don't enjoy continue playing the game. This happened with e.g. Forsaken (=an insane difficulty level) and Daggerfall (= just too buggy and unfun to play overall), I am not trying to finish those games because of some sort of obligation, but still I feel a bit bad not finishing Daggerfall before continuing to Morrowind or newer TES games.

And yeah, that is part of the problem too, the thinking I want to at least try earlier games in the series, before jumping to newer ones. Like not playing Skyrim before at least trying the earlier TES games, or not jumping straight to The Witcher 3, without playing the earlier Witcher games.

Maybe I also should play more other genres than e.g. RPGs which tend to take insane amounts of time to complete. Then again, quite often so do mere FPS or RTS games. E.g. Portal and Limbo were refreshing to me as finishing them certainly didn't take months (like most games do to me), I think I finished both in a couple of days which is quite uncommon for me. And still I felt they were good experiences, didn't feel like they should have been longer.

As for buying more and more games... yeah I fell a victim of it once again, after watching this video the other day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP2Ag9C-FDE

"50 AWESOME Games to put into your Steam Wishlist! 50 Games to Get on Steam Sale! 2023"

I didn't buy or wishilist them on Steam though. I went through that list, most of them available on GOG, and bought a few games that were on GOG sale now, and marked many to my wishlist to wait for future sales.

I ended up buying "only" three games this time:
- Expeditions: Rome (+ DLCs)
- Expeditions: Vikings (+ DLCs)
- Deep Sky Derelicts Definite Edition

Many of those listed games I had already, and quite many I added to my GOG wishlist...

Could be worse! I could have used the money to cigarettes, alcohol and/or prostitutes! At least games don't give you lung cancer, headache and STD.
