fishbaits: Through the Market, players can purchase Loot Chests, War Chests, XP Boosts and Bundles (accessed only with an internet connection).

Loot Chests contain Gear (weapons and armor) of varying rarity. Equipping and upgrading these weapons and armor enhance Talion’s character abilities. Loot Chests can also contain XP Boosts that help level up Talion faster.

• War Chests provide Orc followers of varying rarity to help forge a strong army. They can also contain Training Orders to level up and customize Orc followers.
• XP Boosts are consumables that help level up Talion faster.
• Bundles package up Loot Chests, War Chests and Boosts together at a great value.

To purchase these items, players can spend Mirian or Gold throughout the game as one progresses. Mirian is a type of in-game currency that can be acquired by:

• Defeating Treasure Orcs
• Destroying Gear for Mirian
• Destroying Orc followers for Gear (which can be destroyed for Mirian)
• Finding Mirian stashes throughout the game

Gold is another form of in-game currency that can be used to get higher level Loot Chests, War Chests, Boosts and Bundles of the aforementioned content. Gold can be acquired by:

• Purchasing through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store or by adding to your Steam Wallet using real money.

• Awarded in small amounts at specific milestones.
• Awarded for participating in community challenges.

Please note: No content in the game is gated by Gold. All content can be acquired naturally through normal gameplay.
(we'll see...)
I'll be more than willing to boycott any company that tries this. XP based microtransactions in single player games is crossing line, a line that developers REALLY like to try and toy with. I don't care how much money it costs for games to be made these days, a single player game should NEVER have this monetization model.

It's too late for the multiplayer titles, but not for our single player games. The thought of playing War For The Overworld after a long day of study and having my game spammed with loot boxes and a large abnoxious "Optional! Speed up your progress!" banner on my loading screens really makes me lose faith in an industry that keeps dissapointing me year after year.

So many great game franchises I love have been destroyed.

It sucks :/
The main problem is:
When you turn your game into a "shop" - you have to promote your "goods" - basically this means that every player will be constantly reminded about existance of this microtransactions, one way or another.
For me this means - death of story driven singleplayer games, because when I come home and want to dive into a game - I will be spammed with "BUY lootbox, BUY xp boost, etc... "

I say, somebody call the ASPCP!
Warner Bros. Interactive truly is scum, sucking the heart and soul away from any potentially good game with their constant need to squeeze out every penny from their consumers. This and their insistance on keeping Denuvo on long since cracked games has put them right at the top of the list of worst game publishers, just below Konami.

Jim Sterling sums up the forced microtransactions in this single player RPG perfectly:

"By adding an explicit value to the time saved you're suggesting that the time spent playing the game is worthless."

Also here is the full video rightfully calling out WB Interactive on their despicable shenanigans bound to ruin single player games for everyone when this becomes a common practice:

Trick question. It can always get worse, especially when WB is involved. The milking has barely begun as far as they're concerned.

True indeed. No doubt there's still more to come & I dare say they've most likely made the grind in game longer, so try & coax anyone (stupid enough) to purchase loot things :/
Blizzard have just done a pet in game for $10, where 100% of the funds goes to two charities. Sort of makes WB's actions look even dodgier than they already were.
There's no "T&C apply", no "Some states/countries etc not included".

Hmm, something's afoot.

The day one DLC that was (supposedly) to honour their colleague has vanished from steam store in a few regions.

Welp, it looks like it's mainstream now, as Forza7 also has loot crates.

It's a feckin' driving game, with loot crates!?

If as many people that watch and make these videos and threads started petitioning their members of congress to outlaw these gambling-lite practices there might be a chance to pull one over on the industry before they had time to react. Software companies like EA and Square aren't typically known for having lobbyists on their payroll and would likely be caught off guard while the real gambling industry that does pay for influence might welcome the destruction of perceived competition.
