Most of the "remakes" you mention aren't remakes, they're source ports. The difference is that a remake would be a complete remake of the game and would not require the original game files. Source ports are new engines built using the source code of the original game and use the original data files.

I like DarkPlaces, a Quake source port.

I actually have the original forsaken and it still works perfectly on Windows 7 64 for some reason. I decided to download this one and compare the two... oh my. For whatever reason, the controls on ProjectX are HORRENDOUS! No idea why. The mouse feels perfectly smooth in the original game but is barely functional in ProjectX. Any idea why there is such a difference?

Me? No I haven't actually tried it myself - just saw someone else mention it the other day...
For those who liked Alien Breed, Outpost Haven could be interesting.
