I haven't been interested in anything they've been releasing lately, to be honest. So yeah, I'm with you on "not much good stuff lately." And of course "good" is subjective; how dull the threads would be around here if everyone was objective!

Person one: "X" was released today.
Person two: Yes, it was.

Wishbone: Let's also not forget how that went:

GOG: We got LucasArts! You'll get 20+ titles! Here are the first six!

Community: Yes! Finally! When can we expect more than those initial six games?

GOG: ...

Community: Uhm, GOG? It's been a while. How are those LucasArts releases coming along?

GOG: ...

Community: GOG? Are you there? LucasArts? Hello? It's been a long time and you've said nothing.

GOG: ...

If you happen to know that GOG has ever actually answered those questions, by all means do link to the answers. I am aware that I may simply have missed them, but the above is the distinct impression I have of the situation.
There was an official answer on late december, but it was on facebook, saying the rest of those 14+ lucas games are scheduled for 2015. The link was posted several times, i'm lazy to search it now.

NoNewTaleToTell: Lets not forget that just a few months ago GOG got Lucasfilm/Disney aboard which led to six classic games being released at one time.

Wishbone: Let's also not forget how that went:
I don't really like the long break and silence after the first release either, but if I put these personal feelings aside, sadly many reactions to it seems to confirm GOG in their tactics to spread their releases over several weeks instead of giving them to us all at once. I wonder, if they had released only one of those 6 LucasArts titles every two weeks or so, whether it would have created more buzz. Or in any case, whether that would have shut up half of the people complaining about a lack of classic releases here on the forums. Then again, maybe they'd have been replaced by even more threads of the "You've released the wrong LA title again, how long until my favorite appears!?" kind. ;)

CrashLT: ...I am just curious if you guys have similar feelings or noticing any trends?...
Yes I observe that too and think it is because the classic gems despite their age are much better than modern indie games. Given that GOG cannot acquire modern AAA DRM free games, that's what you get. The ratings of the games recently released are quite bad if I'm not mistaken.

Well, occasionally GOG still releases cool games. Lucasarts, Risen, ... are such examples.

I personally think it's bad to have games ready for release and not releasing them. This is like torture in a way, but I also understand that they should spread them a bit. But maybe not that thin. They risk that people pirate the games that they could otherwise buy here.

That's another thing about GOG's communication skills: sometimes it seems like they impart important information everywhere but on their actual website, which seems to be just about the worst way to go about it. If they have something important to say to their customers, they can't expect those customers to have to check Twitter, Facebook, the GOG Blog and various gaming news sites in order to find this out. By all means, it's fine if they report it in any or all of those places, but they have to also put the information on their own website.

Personally, I think it would have been better. A new LucasArts title every two weeks for over 9 months? Heaven! And a sure source of constant cash flow for GOG I should think. Whereas dumping 6 of them in the catalog in one go probably means that even the people who wanted all 6 of them probably had to only buy some of them right away. Th question then becomes how long it will take them to get around to buying the rest of them. All in all, I think they would have made more sales altogether by releasing them one at a time on a steady schedule.

Regardless, the lack of information on the issue is galling.

Niggles: I think its safe to say that the group of people who dont like platformers is fairly decent sized compared to the rest...
I almost exclusively play platformers on a handheld console, or on my Wii or Wii U. Otherwise, I just don't really ever have an interest in them.

Heh.

I remember back in 2013, when System Shock 2 and Wizardry VI, VIII, and VIII came to GOG, and back then there were people saying that GOG wasn't trying hard enough, wasn't releasing any good games, and wasn't releasing any classics. People were crowing on about it after the big change in 2012, and there were people saying that even in 2010, when the Hasbro/Atari D&D games game to GOG.

I still don't understand why people insist that it's all GOG's fault, and don't lay any of the blame at all on the publishers/developers for whom it's pretty clear that they don't want to be on GOG because of their regional pricing and no-DRM stance. It's not as if it's all up to GOG. Oh wait, when GOG actually did show that they were willing to compromise on one of their core founding principles -- regional pricing -- to maintain if not expand the catalog, everyone and their mother complained and protested.

I just wish that people would keep the complaining to the other threads that are already going. It's enough already that we have threads posted about how GOG should join Steam or become a Steam key retailer on an almost daily basis.

CrashLT: lately I have noticed that there has been a lack of "good" releases for a while.
Hey, this can be a touchy subject around here but I'm glad you at least said something, though it probably would have been better to use "I think" or "I feel" more than once because not everyone feels the same way.

Obviously "good" is relative. I disagree about the lack of "good" games (like NEO Scavenger) but certainly the lack of "good old games".
avatar
CrashLT: When I first joined GOG, I was always excited to see classics being released every week. Now classics have become an even rarer entity. I still love GOG's DRM free policy, but I just feel that they aren't trying as hard as they used to in acquiring classic titles
Remember the complexity in getting some of these games - getting publishers' attention, securing rights, ensuring they work on modern machines, etc. There are multiple possibilities as to why we don't have certain titles yet.

Still, if GOG does not have what you want, you may have to shop around. Steam has started adding more classics from pubs like Retroism so that may be where you have to buy from. (Technically they are DRM-free also, I believe.) Other stores like DotEmu, ShinyLoot, GamersGate, etc. have DRM-free and classic options, too, though obviously more limited.

Personally I'm more or less content just to wait. I plan on avoiding Steam but will shop around for other non-Steam options (that actually work on my computer :P).

He probably didn't see the other thread.

And assuming he buys most of the "good old games" that pop up, why can't this count as giving feedback to GOG?

1)Take a shot everytime someone complains about GOG not releasing enough classic games.
2)Take a shot everytime someone complains about GOG releasing too many indie platformers/indie games in general.
3)Take a shot everytime someone complains GOG doesn't do enough to bring the latest AAA games here.
4)Take a shot everytime someone predicts GOG will just start embrassing DRM at some point because they dared to abandon flat pricing.
5)Die of liver poisoning within 72 hours.

I dont understand why gog does a delayed new release , it makes no sense its not like people are going to retain the same interest as to when the news broke out first.

1) day 1 same date releases for newer games instead of a late release later
2) rapid releases without any waiting bs for no proper reason , announce xyz publisher has signed , release all their games instead of this slow needless release.

i hope to see it happen some day specially after gog galaxy speeds up content delivery

CrashLT: ...
I mostly get excited about Indie titles these days.

A lot of aging titles don't age so well and a lot of AAA titles don't really go outside the beaten path.

So yeah, GOG has had some exciting releases on that front. I occasionally get excited about old or AAA titles too, just far less often.

Trilarion: Yes I observe that too and think it is because the classic gems despite their age are much better than modern indie games.
Depends on the Gem and depends on the Indie game.

Not all old games are like MOO 1&2. Some are great for the era you play them in, but when you revisit them decades later, they make you cringe.

Ex: Wing Commander titles or Crusader... were all the rage back in the days, but now... not so hot. I'd have serious qualms about recommending those titles to someone. Master of Orion 2, X-Com or Freespace 1&2 will age a lot better, but will they still be relevant 20-30 years from now? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on what else is out there by that time.

CrashLT: I usually do not like to be a hindrance to anyone or anything, but lately I have noticed that there has been a lack of "good" releases for a while. Is it just me? When I first joined GOG, I was always excited to see classics being released every week.
Yes and no.
Yes the release of classics has declined. Which is only natural as there simply aren't that many classic gems left to release as 5 years before. And for those still falling into that category, it hasn't become easier to get the rights to do so.

No, there is no lack of "good" releases. Anyone considering Drox Operative, This War of Mine, Neo Scavenger or King's Bounty: WotN (among others) as not good, is in desperate need of a good smack on the forehead - preferably with a table and repeatedly. :p

On a sidenote: Akalabeth. Classic. For free.
