What happens when you mix alternate history with over-the-top campy action and cliché 1990s-style characters? You get Freedom Fighters! Released in 2003, the game is a perfect example of pulp-style entertainment combined with an engaging story. Now you can revisit the classic game from IO Interactive on your modern computer.

The redcoats are coming!
Let’s be honest, the geographical location of the USA renders any invasion on American soil rather unlikely. Sure, there was a time in 1814 when the British managed to capture and burn Washington DC, but that was long ago. Yet, the perspective of foreign invasion and occupation of the USA has fired the imagination of American writers and filmmakers for decades.

Events that took place during the Cold War, like the Red Scare and the Cuban Missile Crisis, brought up a question - how would Americans react when faced with an enemy invasion? Books dealing with alternate history, like the Man in the High Castle from Philip K. Dick and films like Red Dawn, are especially worth mentioning regarding this interesting topic. Even video game developers tackled the idea, with games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Freedom Fighters coming long after the Cold War faded away in history books.

Freedom is not free
The game from IO Interactive presents an alternate history where the Second World War ended with the USSR dropping an atomic bomb on Berlin. Consequently, the Red Army took over the rest of Europe’s countries, slowly surrounding the USA with its communist states. Finally, the time has come to stab the capitalist regime in the heart and that’s where you start in Freedom Fighters, with the USSR’s invasion of the USA!

The main hero of the game, New York City plumber Chris Troy, is reluctantly thrown into the center of these big events. After his brother is taken prisoner by invading forces, Chris joins the resistance movement, poised on striking the shackles of the Soviet occupation. Along with his compatriots, Isabella Angelina and Phil Bagzton, he deals heavy blows to the Soviet forces commanded by the villainous General Tatarin. Little do our heroes know that their own ranks are being infiltrated by the KGB, led by Colonel Bulba (voiced by the famous television actor, Nicholas Worth).

A highly enjoyable classic
Although the game’s story seems very dark at first sight, Freedom Fighters never takes itself too seriously. Its plot is filled with goofy tropes and characters that are so one-dimensional they seem almost torn straight from exciting pulp literature and 1990s TV shows. Did you know that creators from IO Interactive made Freedom Fighters while taking a break from their masterpiece, the Hitman series? Both games share the same dark sense of humor and have memorable, award-winning scores composed by Jesper Kyd.

As for game mechanics, things are kept as simple and enjoyable as possible. Freedom Fighters is a third-person shooter. The player navigates through the streets of New York with a controllable squad of teammates while at the same time fighting the occupying Soviet forces. By performing various heroic deeds, our main character receives charisma points that allow players to expand their squad to up to 12 members. The game’s team management aspect was especially applauded by gamers, because of its intuitiveness.

Freedom Fighters comes to Windows 10 in all its classic glory, exactly as you remember it. Even 17 years after its release, the title still feels fresh and fun. So, get the game on GOG.COM now and take the chance to raise arms against oppression!
It was mediocre at best back then, so it's hard to believe it aged well. But every product has its buyer, I guess.

Truth007: The game works on WIndows 7 for those that are curious.
Hm, then why it is not listed as such?
I thought some technical difficulty prevents GOG to list it as supported OS, especially now, when CDPR released Minimum Requirements for C2077, and Windows 7 IS supported!

Aw, man, the British want to take away our independence again? Well, if it means nationalized health care... have at it! ;)

putridpete: Unfortunately the game is not working for me under Windows 10 Pro x64. As soon as I launch it, Freedom.Exe stops responding and it won't start. Maybe it's something on my end, but so far none of the resolutions, compatibility settings and other tweaks have worked.
This is an older game, requiring an older DirectX suite/library (DX).

W10 is namely DX10, DX11 and DX12 based. Namely,W10 uses DX12...
...but DX11 and DX10 games should work fine. [knock on wood]

If you boot the game and Windows asks you to install DirectPlay on W10 b/c it realizes you are running and older DX-base game - do it. This will help a lot for older games. This might be your solution entirely.

Then again, that might not be all you need.

If that (installing DirectPlay) doesn't entirely do the trick...you might need a DirectX wrapper here, when running old games on Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 (i.e. modern Windows OS's).

DX Wrappers like DGVoodoo can help out w/ weird graphics issues, glitches, freezes, crashes, etc etc on modern Windows OS's.

Have you tried installing, running, and configuring DGVoodoo or some kind of DXWrapper on top of Freedom Fighters?

There's some general tips right there.

EDIT:
Also worth checking the Wiki for Freedom Fighters too...for info, possible unofficial patches, fixes and all of that jazz:

Thank you very much for your detailed response, it is much appreciated. Thankfully, as I've indicated in a subsequent post, I fixed the issue by turning off Windows Sonic for Headphones and I can play the game now without problems.

Cheers and thank you again for your response!
Thanks for much for getting this :D

DoomSooth: It only works with Windows 10?

OPlay: Ehmmm... WIndows 10 is 5 years old. Windows 7 turned 11 years old in 2020. And the former is not supported anymore.
Windows 10 is retarded while windows 7 is fixed and this game came out for the Playstation 2, 17 years ago.

Sachys: recently gave my old PS2 copy of that to a friend. my only gripe with that game was that the whole "paranoia" team mechanic was underused and it was more shooty shoot shoot than psychological.
It was also semi scripted which limited it's scare value as I recall.

Okay, I somehow missed that post. Sorry about that!

I'm glad it was something as simple as disabling Windows Sonic for Headphones. It stinks that you have to disable something to get it going - but if you're cool w/ that work-around/fix, that's great! :)

Regardless, in general, my generic tips can also help you across other older games on modern OS's (W7, W8, W8.1, W10).

I always check Steam Guides; GOG Forums; use DGVoodoo if need be on older games (especially games from DX1 to DX9), check PC Gaming Wiki for unofficial patches - or do whatever to get a game going.

Hope that all helps!

Everytime i try to read the title without really reading it, i see 'Save these fighters from this crummy action game'
