What happens when you mix alternate history with over-the-top campy action and cliché 1990s-style characters? You get Freedom Fighters! Released in 2003, the game is a perfect example of pulp-style entertainment combined with an engaging story. Now you can revisit the classic game from IO Interactive on your modern computer.

The redcoats are coming!
Let’s be honest, the geographical location of the USA renders any invasion on American soil rather unlikely. Sure, there was a time in 1814 when the British managed to capture and burn Washington DC, but that was long ago. Yet, the perspective of foreign invasion and occupation of the USA has fired the imagination of American writers and filmmakers for decades.

Events that took place during the Cold War, like the Red Scare and the Cuban Missile Crisis, brought up a question - how would Americans react when faced with an enemy invasion? Books dealing with alternate history, like the Man in the High Castle from Philip K. Dick and films like Red Dawn, are especially worth mentioning regarding this interesting topic. Even video game developers tackled the idea, with games like Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Freedom Fighters coming long after the Cold War faded away in history books.

Freedom is not free
The game from IO Interactive presents an alternate history where the Second World War ended with the USSR dropping an atomic bomb on Berlin. Consequently, the Red Army took over the rest of Europe’s countries, slowly surrounding the USA with its communist states. Finally, the time has come to stab the capitalist regime in the heart and that’s where you start in Freedom Fighters, with the USSR’s invasion of the USA!

The main hero of the game, New York City plumber Chris Troy, is reluctantly thrown into the center of these big events. After his brother is taken prisoner by invading forces, Chris joins the resistance movement, poised on striking the shackles of the Soviet occupation. Along with his compatriots, Isabella Angelina and Phil Bagzton, he deals heavy blows to the Soviet forces commanded by the villainous General Tatarin. Little do our heroes know that their own ranks are being infiltrated by the KGB, led by Colonel Bulba (voiced by the famous television actor, Nicholas Worth).

A highly enjoyable classic
Although the game’s story seems very dark at first sight, Freedom Fighters never takes itself too seriously. Its plot is filled with goofy tropes and characters that are so one-dimensional they seem almost torn straight from exciting pulp literature and 1990s TV shows. Did you know that creators from IO Interactive made Freedom Fighters while taking a break from their masterpiece, the Hitman series? Both games share the same dark sense of humor and have memorable, award-winning scores composed by Jesper Kyd.

As for game mechanics, things are kept as simple and enjoyable as possible. Freedom Fighters is a third-person shooter. The player navigates through the streets of New York with a controllable squad of teammates while at the same time fighting the occupying Soviet forces. By performing various heroic deeds, our main character receives charisma points that allow players to expand their squad to up to 12 members. The game’s team management aspect was especially applauded by gamers, because of its intuitiveness.

Freedom Fighters comes to Windows 10 in all its classic glory, exactly as you remember it. Even 17 years after its release, the title still feels fresh and fun. So, get the game on GOG.COM now and take the chance to raise arms against oppression!
How long does the launch discount last? Can't find any info on that in the news post. Hoping it'll be until Friday when I get my next paycheck.
Oh wow what an unexpected surprise, this was a lot of fun! Not sure how it aged though
Anyone know if 1080p is supported?

I got it and yes it does and looks very good for a game this old!

Instantly bought it when I saw the email!

I voted for it in the suggestions. I have played it before, but now I will do so legitimately.
Man, this Game was the definition of Childhood. Absolutely bloody amazing.
I enjoyed schlocky 80s movies a whole lot more than tries-too-hard 2010s movies, so this is probably my sort of deal. I'd need to know more about the W7 thing though...new games not supporting it is somewhat understandable (but really, W10-only DLLs and such don't offer many benefits), however it seems odd than an XP era game would have any reason to care.
Oh, I loved this game back in the days, great that it's here.
Not the Freedom Fighters I was hoping for :P

Pssh. Uncle Sam and his Congress critters are too busy counting their lobbying dollars rather than actually caring about justice, =/

fronzelneekburm: I played it through once, put it aside and never touched it again (in stark contrast to the Hitman games - well, 2-4 that is, which I still replay once or twice every year).

But I seem to be in the minority here, there seem to be several quite enthusiastic users in this thread, maybe they can elaborate some more.
i cant speak for all
but some like this game because you can take command of AI boots with real simple button presses and make them do tasks
occupying an enemy base forexample and at the same time do stuff yourself.
Also
you kind of build up a relation to the members you recruit and will later try doing missions over again to try to get a perfect score.
You can think of this game as 3D version of commandos, not turn based also with diffrent goals and of course diffrent story.

This game has its own kind of flavor of charm and is also considered as a cult classic.
Maybe this description want really that useful. Its too long since ive played it.

Heres bits and pieces of the most important information from Gamespot withouth spoiling too much

It must take a lot of work to make a squad-based action game. On top of having to deliver all the core aspects that any shooter should have--things like responsive gameplay and great graphics and sound--a game designer working with squad-style gameplay also has to worry a lot about artificial intelligence. All it takes is a smattering of instances where a player's AI squadmates get stuck on a wall or take an inefficient path around a few obstacles to really shatter the illusion of working with a team and turn the game into a drone-babysitting simulation. Freedom Fighters, the new game from the developers of last year's great Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, deftly avoids the many pitfalls of AI squad tactics, and this, combined with great control, mission design, and presentation, makes for a truly fantastic game.

At the outset, Freedom Fighters plays like a rock-solid third-person shooter, with smooth and responsive controls. You can shoot from the hip or raise your weapon for precision firing, which causes the camera to zoom in slightly for a cool over-the-shoulder view. You have an inventory of items and the ability to carry a pistol and one primary weapon, such as a shotgun, an assault rifle, a sniper rifle, a machine gun, a rocket launcher, or a submachine gun. You'll also be able to carry grenades, Molotov cocktails, high explosives, binoculars, and health packs that restore your health when used, though they can also be used to heal wounded civilians or other freedom fighters.

Once you've operated on your own for a little while and have gotten used to the control, thanks to some well-placed training messages, the game gives you the ability to command up to two other squad mates. By increasing your charisma rating--which goes up as you complete missions and can also be given optional boosts if you rescue prisoners or heal civilians--you can eventually control up to 12 soldiers simultaneously. Running with a crowd definitely makes Freedom Fighters feel like a much larger game, and the late-game firefights that erupt when you have a larger squad are extremely impressive and, more importantly, a lot of fun.

Squad control is both simple and effective in Freedom Fighters. You need only three buttons to command your troops on the battlefield. The recall button forces troops to fall in behind you. The attack button can be used to send troops after a specific soldier, or you can target a general area to get troops to cover specific locations. Finally, the defend button is used to get troops to hold their position. Tapping the buttons will assign commands to one member of your squad, but holding the button down for a split-second longer assigns the command to your entire squad, which is usually more effective.

The squad AI isn't perfect--we saw our troops get hung up when attempting to climb down onto some train tracks, and we saw one instance of a squad member not taking the most efficient path to its destination--but its rare problems are easily overlooked because the rest of the time they work very well, and using your team effectively is really satisfying. Squadmates support each other and naturally use the urban terrain for cover. You can effectively lead their charge, or you can let them do a lot of the work themselves and support them with covering fire. The squad dynamic lends the action a great deal of variety, ensuring that no two skirmishes will play out in quite the same fashion.

If you can get our hands on these two do it; you might like them ;) By now there might also be reprints combining them into one.

Matewis: Oh wow what an unexpected surprise, this was a lot of fun! Not sure how it aged though
For such an old (but not *so* old really) game, i think it aged gracefully. The fun is still there and the graphics still look great to me. Another game i'd like to see coming here is The Thing; it was released close to Freedom Fighters and i've had tons of fun with it too.
