stg83: How will GOG's customer service differentiate between which customers are actually in Russia and those that are being dishonest about it while using a VPN.?
avatar
Foxhack: Is the purchaser using a payment method with a Russian address?

No?

Then block the sale.
So, no PayPal for Russia?
avatar
ThePunishedSnake: Yes there is, just bind the payment method to a country.
IE russian games can be bought only with russian payment methods.
avatar
stg83: Then what about customers that travel to Russia for a short period of time and are in their rights to buy the game at the designated regional pricing, should they be locked out from purchasing games using credit cards from their own country's banks?
Planning around edge cases is bad policy.

Imposing restrictions that could be a hindrance for even a single legitimate customer is bad policy. Its similar to publishers putting DRM on their games to stop piracy.

ThePunishedSnake: GOG should be able to sort that out, just put on a quick customer ad hoc service, only related to situation like this, so they can be solved quickly.

Well, if you own a russian CC, I think you can use it everywhere, just like an US CC etc. So even if he moved, the payment is still originated from a russian CC.

Doesn't PayPal keep your location info as part of your profile information? They asked me for my address when I signed up.

^ This!

GOG was always about trust (they trust us to not abuse the DRM-free installers) and now they simply have to trust us that we won't use a VPN to buy games for the Russian prices. And even if some people do it, they simply have to live with it. They were the ones that wanted to introduce regional pricing.

The moment they introduce regional locks that forbid me to buy games or play games when I'm in a cheaper region I'm out!

^^ This. I fully agree with stg83 on this.

On the plus side, at least these people are still buying games at gog and not resorting to pirating it.

So in a way gog still benefits from the profit of legal sales.
It was never a good idea to introduce regional pricing. We (mostly all) objected, so GOG backed down, and introduced regional pricing while telling us they wouldn't.

The quandry about people gaming the system to get cheaper prices does at least mean that it's only GOG that get screwed over, and for regional pricing issues - that's fine with me.

So what, if you travel and want to make a paypal payment while traveling they wont let you?
I'm pretty sure they'll let you, eventually they'll throw in a secondary check at log-in but in the end you'll be able to make payments from your paypal account no matter your location.

That's what steam does, and it sucks. I used to live in France, near the Swiss border, with my Belgian credit card. Spent a lot of time in Switzerland, and that crap wouldn't let me buy a game from there..

This. Really really annoying. I hope gog never introduces such a stupid system.

Steam used to block my paypal payments while traveling. It was quite annoying.

Yeah, also happened to me a few weeks ago. Was visiting my parents in Germany and wanted to buy a new Lego game to play with my mum and steam blocked my paypal.

You're not supposed to travel in real life, duh!
Buy some open world RPGs and tons of DLCs instead so you can do it there. ;)

And forget about your relatives, they only cost time you could use to buy more stuff.

Steam, yes, but not paypal was behind the blocking! ;)
