Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

goldragon: My personal opinion.
I don't need multiplayer and achievements.
And I absolutely don't want my installers to contain some bloatware I won't ever use.
So I guess it's the end for my purchases here.
You seem quite uninformed. Things will keep on as usual for those who desire so. The impact on installer will be minimal IF there is even any modification needed.

The information i get from another thread is this (from Fallen Zen / GOG Staff):

The Galaxy Client will be DRM-free just like the GOG Downloader is now. Also it will offer more options for you guys, like managing your games library right from the client. We do not want to support 2 optional clients, so the Downloader will go away after the Galaxy launches.

That´s not called Freedom of Choice.

And on page 5 of this thread he says the same, with other words.

So: NO freedom of choice. Swim or sink.

GoG Galaxy will only be for those who want it, everyone else will continue as they are now. It's an optional client which will only be required for multiplayer (which is expected anyway)

I'm also disappointed that the GOG downloader will be discontinued. I do not want to install GOG Galaxy so it is as you said - sink or swim. :(

Read here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/introducing_gog_galaxy/?staff=yes/
"Basically, we will be updating the installers to have Galaxy functions while remaining standalone"

Installers will be repacked.
So it's not optional to have it in your system if you'll install the game.
Only optional to use.

Unless I'm missing something, the Downloader functionality will be a subset of the new Galaxy client, and it won't force anything else on you. In fact, it will only add additional features that you can use if you want.

So basically it's an upgrade from a toaster to a toaster oven. You can still just make toast, if that's your preference.
Anyone got a rough idea when this is coming? ( aside from soon)

I hope it doesn't mean we see influx of indie multiplayer games ( check desura and recent indie bundles) - I personally have zero interest in multiplayer as I suspect the majority of the Gog customer base as well ( the wording seems to push multiplayer a bit). I'm actually kinda disappointed there hasn't been any talk of forum overhaul, or has it been mentioned?

It is quite possible to update the installers without adding the client to them, and I sincerely doubt if the client will be included with the installers. In another thread, Fallen_Zen had said that the client will be looking at the registry to see what games it will interact with, and how, so quite possibly the only "bloatware" the installers will have is a couple of registry keys, and maybe a .conf for DOSBox.
That will leave only DOSBox and/or ScummVM and any needed libraries as "Bloatware" in the installers, but those are already here.

Oh, and your old installers will continue to work without issues, so feel free to keep them instead.

People have asked for the client to be modular. If this is truly the case, installing the client should give options on what to install, like Downloader, Matchmaking, Achievements, Profiles etc.
It is though possible that the client want give you the options of what to install, in which case you will need to get everything.
As to whether the client will allow downloading stand alone installers, while no concrete answer has been given yet, it most likely will allow it.

Matchmaking? It's about time GOG added a dating option to this site. ;)

Wifi toaster : make toast remotely, no strings attached.

I hold the patent for a bluetooth toaster, but it turns out most people don't want toast that turns your teeth blue.

I do think that back when I registered, one of the page did mention "Maybe you'll meet the love of your life here", but I can't seem to find it, and wayback machine doesn't really help. May go looking for it later, but doubt I'll find it.
I didn't follow the whole 33 pages but I would be most curious to know if one of the key features: semi-automatic updating of the installers will be included? I really don't want to download installers manually anymore, especially when they update so often. I don't even want to see the notifications about it anymore. Was there maybe any blue news about it?
