l0rdtr3k: LotR can be a chore to read through especially the second book. But they are great books.

Elmofongo: I say it took me 3 months to read.

The most boring chapter in Two Towers was litirally Frodo and Sam just walking from one place to another and talking.
A little bit off-topic, but did you manage to get them without dating a girl? ;)

No. I just bought them from Amazon.

And are you talking about that girl I mentioned in the thread where my mother was playing matchmaker?
avatar
Elmofongo: Saying that they will end the series with a theatrical movie.
avatar
Navagon: I've since seen it reported that they're planning 3 more series to wrap everything up.
You mean 3 more seasons?
avatar
Elmofongo: the show is going to have to completely deviate from the book and come up with its own conclusion while Martin writes his own in the books[..]they will end the series with a theatrical movie.
avatar
phaolo: Uh oh..
What should do with a potential movie is make a movie out of King Robert's Rebellion against the Targaryan Dynasty.

Yep, that's the amazon I had in mind.
I haven't read the books, but in the TV series that sex scene between Daenerys and whatshisface was awesome, best scene in the series!
OK,I noticed a lot of differences between the book and TV show. I'm really prefering the book.
Love the series. The books, the show, the comics, the whole lot. And the best thing about it is my boss is just as geek'd over the show as I am.

Elmofongo: I own all 5 "essential" Middle Earth books in Hardcovers.

The Hobbit
Lord of the Rings
The Silmarillion
Unfinished Tales
and Children of Hurin

And I have yet to read them becasue I am so busy with games.

Avoid The Silmarillion as if it is diseased!
The parts Tolkien wrote himself were okay, but then you get to parts that just don`t make any sense at all or go off on tangents.
Those were the bits written by his son.

As for The Hobbit & LotR, got through those four books in four days back in the `80s, very good they are :)

My brother really liked Children of Hurin, the only Tolkien book we own. It was the only one we were really interested in. One problem is that it it's a little slow at first because it is written to sound like an old story, which is fine and does work to its credit. He said the last third of it makes it a really good book and I'd probably get behind him on that. What I read is actually pretty good too, but it's really depressing to me so I had a hard time going through it. Not that it's actually all that dark compared to stuff anymore but I thought that Tolkien did a good job making us care for characters that don't have a lot of screen time.

I really enjoyed the Hobbit.

Fellowship? Not very much. Just not a big Fantasy fan. I was expecting it to be a bit more epic. Granted I saw the movies a bunch in the theater mostly for the spectacle and the fact that I love long epic movies (War & Peace, Potop for example). At points I just stopped caring.

Khal Drogo.

And he is going to be Aquaman in the new DC movies.

l0rdtr3k: I caved and started to read A Song of Ice and Fire.
I also thought about reading the books.
The only thing that keeps me from doing so, is that - so far - Mr. Martin has not finished them.
And I see no point in starting something so big, if there is a chance, that I'll never see the end of it.
But if he ever ends the bloody story (pun intended), count me in!

l0rdtr3k: [...]I don't like the idea of having a lot of characters die just for shock or to show how the universe is brutal and I think that the sex scenes are unnecessary and are there just for fan service(I have low tolerance of fan service).
Well, The novels aren't any better in this regard. I was actually rather fed up with all the pointless deaths after the third and fourth books, but there was a long enough gap in between A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons that my annoyance subsided. Eventually, after the latter novel came out, I decided to read it (though I didn't buy it), and really enjoyed it. "Why was I so irritated?", I thought. "This is quite good! I don't even remember why I wanted to quit the series."
Then I hit the end of the book... >: [

EDIT: fixed a typo

May brother was rather pissed on what happened to a certain character that he learned to love.

I do have a theory that Martin might not be done with one particular character yet, despite his being killed off... (Though, having not watched anything of the HBO series past episode 1, I can't say if my theory would apply to that, too, or not.)
