Niggles: Im kinda curious. Whats your steam game count vs GOG?
avatar
tinyE: I don't have a Steam account. I just said that, or didn't I? Shit it is too early for these type questions!
In not so many words. Dont walk outside. U might freeze off something important :P
Game counts
GOG:161
Steam:427
Origin:about 30 (mostly Sims for the wife)
Uplay:5 (ahhh assassins creed and splinter cell....)

I seem to be one of the lucky ones though who's offline modes always work and can happily cut the cord for a couple of months without it complaining.

If a game is released here and steam/other platforms I'll usually get the version here since it saves me having to worry if something goes wrong. And I own a few games on both platforms usually bought here first then added with a humble bundle etc.
I don't have any DRM-infested account. No Steam or Upay or Origin games for me, thank you. Any game worth paying for will eventually be released DRM free. Any company strictly sticking to DRM doesn't want my money, apparently.
If there is a game that I want to play then DRM isn't going to stop me. That being said, I still have more games on GOG than I do on steam.

My Game Counts:
Steam: 73
GOG: 86
Origin: 10 (only C&C ultimate collection)

I've been using Steam for a little over 3 years now, and I have to say that my experience has been pretty positive. I don't consider Steam an intrusive DRM. Unlike some others, I have had no issues accessing or playing my games. The updating feature is a bit inconvenient at times but it's not that big of a deal.

However, I refuse to buy anything that Ubisoft makes. Their DRM practices suck something fierce...
I am not fond of EA at all, but the C&C collection is a favorite of mine so I allowed that.

If both Steam and GOG have a game I am interested in, I will try to buy from GOG.

Honestly I'd prefer DRM free games, but if the DRM does not interfere with my playing of the game, I am acceptable to it.

Do the C&C games need to be online to be played?

Suprisingly few Origin games use Origins DRM mode, I think it's ME3 and games after that and even ME3 can be made to play offline not sure about the others...

I've read somewhere that the C&C games require you to be online in order to play.

I just unplugged my internet and opened Red Alert 2 and the game ran fine, so I don't think it does, but I don't know if that applies to all games in that collection.
I boycotted Diablo 3 and stuck to my guns, haven't given in. Singleplayer modes that are always online are the line I am not willing to cross.

Steam I tolerate. I might not if cracks didn't exist for a possible future where Steam shuts down, but in that horror future scenario people will make sure the games keep playing, so I tolerate it. I think it's more future proof than buying a console game tied to specific hardware and patch servers.

Ok, thanks, then I might pick this up on some future amazon sale.

I know how you feel. Exactly this (and the lack of LAN) is why I never bought Starcraft 2, even though I loved the original Starcraft. I've also skipped some other games with shady DRM, like recent Ubisoft games.

Indie Game Stand: 10

F*** DRM, I have more than enough games without these! ;)

Upay? What's this anyway? Never heard of it, sounds unfriendly "You PAY!"

Ubisoft dropped the always online thing a while back and is just like Steam now with Uplay, if that matters to you.

Really? Because I notice whenever I launch MMX on Steam, it *always* boots up Uplay first.
Most of my games on Steam are things that I wanted access to that I couldn't get here, like the Wolfensteins, Quakes, Heretic, Hexen, etc. There were a few games I have picked up on both admittedly, such as Hotline Miami and Deus Ex, but when I want to play them I install the GOG versions.

That said, I don't boycott Steam. It has been nice for playing games online with friends around the country. We've tried with a few GOG games to get online multiplayer set up, but after spending our time fighting with titles like Icewind Dale instead of playing them, we gave up and just went back to Steam. Though lately my friends and I have been considering getting a VPN setup to lessen our reliance on Steam.
