pimpmonkey2382.313: Thanks for all of your help. :) I mainly started using linux as a sort of back up OS in case anything happened with my windows, but I am enjoying linux despite the problems.
When I started using Linux it came with it's share of problems too, but I persisted and it was rewarding. The important thing is that you're enjoying. Keep at it :-)

I've just downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1 and 12.04.5 to check on those Xorg versions for you, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks man, I greatly appreciate your help also. You guys have been real troopers with this. :)
Here's additional forum thread from Linux Mint.

So far, it seems that if/when you install the right dependencies, it's as simple as downloading the AMD's zip/run file and then executing it as root. :)

Is there anything like the wubi installer for mint 13? Not having a blank disc or sd card reader handy is a bitch. With wubi I was able to do a windows ubuntu install, then when I booted up into that, a full ubuntu install on my 2nd HDD.

You can download: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and Install it from a USB, a 2GB one is enough.

EDIT:

Checked on those X versions -

12.04.1 = Xorg v1.11.3
12.04.4 = Xorg v1.14.5
12.04.5 = Xorg v1.15.1 (Same version as Ubuntu 14.04)

Looks like 12.04.1 is your best bet.

Not sure if Linux Mint 13 has this, but check this out.

My GeForce GT430 just died on me and it's 2AM here, so I had to boot back up with the AMD onboard graphics.

ssokolow@monolith Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic % lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
ssokolow@monolith Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic % echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
Lubuntu
ssokolow@monolith Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic % glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880
Wasteland works perfectly for me, which means that you may just need newer Gallium AMD drivers from the PPA I'd been using to work around an nVidia binary driver bug.

(I'd give instructions for installing it here, but they ask that I link to their instructions instead to make sure it's your own damn fault if you use the PPA incorrectly and break something.)

Failing that, one of the following is true:
1. It's not the video drivers
2. It's in the bits of device specific code that are marked "DONE" for my GPU but "TODO" for yours. (References: [2] [4] )

Got what's probably a small problem now with mint 13, cinnamon 64 bit. I got the proprietary drivers installed, (it actually did it in the additional drivers menu, yay.) but now it's trying to boot up into some resolution unsupported by my monitor.
found this in the official forums:
https://forums.inxile-entertainment.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=4791

Wasteland Known Issues

Wasteland drops back to the desktop immediately after launching and it eventually closes the game out.
o Restarting your computer can fix the issue.
o If the issue persists, update your video card and monitor drivers and restart again.
o The game may not run on monitors below resolutions of 1280x720 and will dump to desktop if rejecting your resolution.
iirc, you were running 1024x768, weren't you?

there is another thread here:
https://forums.inxile-entertainment.com//viewtopic.php?p=82115
where somebody posted a solution for this

I recently got it working on my netbook which has a reso of 1024x600.

Going into the configure file, I set fullscreen to false, and set the resolution to match the netbook's. When you start the game, it is indeed off center and doesn't fit the desktop well. However, wait for the splash screens to go by, and once you're on the options screen, you can alt-enter to fullscreen and it works just fine.

Just setting the default resolution won't suffice, you need to do both. It's kind of annoying, but a pretty small workaround, all things considered. And since it's just the splash screens that are the problem, you can fullscreen the game once they're gone. I played up through Harry before I had to quit, but it worked.
since I don't have the game, I can't add any more advice. Maybe the others who have this game can tell you exactly where this config file is, that they are talking about.

edit:
really hilarious that they ship a game from the 80s which requires a resolution of at least 720p. Especially considering how the game looks :p

My guess is that their renderer does smoothed upscaling at a fixed magnification factor to output 1280x720, asks libSDL for a 1280x720 fullscreen window, and then does as little failure handling as possible if the request can't be satisfied.

(Which would make sense if the original graphics were 640x360 or 320x180. 1280x720 is a clean integer multiple of those two resolutions)

I just checked. They're using a specialized DOSBox build and the config file in question is at ~/.wasteland/wl.conf

Still can't boot into a good resolution. Just get a black screen and my monitor acts as if it's not getting a signal.
Woo! figured it out myself with the ati config command line.
Holy shit, I got wasteland running.

EDIT:

It wouldn't let me run by starting the start.sh, but WOULD run in through the wasteland command.

Happy to hear you finally figured it all out :-)
I want to give everyone who helped me a huge, huge thank you and wish I could give everyone the rep bonus of a solution, but since niniendowarrior directed me towards mint 13, I will have to give it to him. Thank you very very much to everyone involved. :)
