niniendowarrior: Okay. Desktop version of the driver is also available. Do you know the native resolution of your monitor? Are you using a 64-bit distribution?
Not native off hand, but in vista it can do up to 1600 x 1200 and I'm using 32bit Ubuntu 14.10

Well, I did some research and it looks like you cannot install AMD's legacy driver on Ubuntu 14.10 because the two are totally incompatible.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2244550&page=4&p=13125269#post13125269

Says that the last Ubuntu that is compatible with that AMD driver is Ubuntu 12.04.1 which is a fraction older than Ubuntu (12.10) I use on my dev laptop (unsupported but compatibility with my laptop was way better than the newer Ubuntu releases).

I suspect that being able to install fglrx will allow you to push the monitor resolution to 1600x1200, but this would require an older Ubuntu release. On Ubuntu 14.10, you are going to be stuck on those open source drivers.

Will gog games run on 12.04.1?

My GOG Linux game library is rather limited, so while I can try some of them, I'm not too sure regarding a definitive answer. My gut feeling says it should be OK, but I don't have much to back that up.

I'll continue digging if there are other Debian derivatives that you can use, if you're open to using something else other than Ubuntu.

Yep, open to about anything.

Right now, it's looking like Linux Mint and Debian have fglrx-legacy repackaged. I'd like people who have those OSes to chime in and see if there are any problems with them.

The reality is that you're in a tough spot with an aging graphics driver with dropped OEM support and a new Ubuntu distro whose solution to that is using the open source driver. Some folks in the Ubuntu forums think that is sufficient, but in your case, it's obvious that it is not.

I'll keep digging and will post back if I can find some first hand posts from folks in the official forums.

EDIT:
In addition, here is the exact verbiage from AMD's wiki regarding legacy drivers.

"ATI RadeonHD 2x00 - 4xx0 cards If you have one of these cards, you have the option of using the Catalyst Legacy driver, but you will need to install/use Ubuntu 12.04.1"

Thank you for all of your help, I greatly appreciate it, your help and all the others.
Debian's instructions seem fairly straightforward.

https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

Wheezy is the latest release and the legacy drivers seem to be supported.

AMD Catalyst Legacy 13.1 - For support of Radeon HD 4000, Radeon HD 3000 and Radeon HD 2000 series GPUs.

EDIT:
It looks like the newest Linux Mint has similar issues as Ubuntu.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=182672

The solution proposed is to install Linux Mint 13 (which is still supported, unlike Ubuntu 12.04.1). The older Xorg server means that the older legacy drivers should work. Support for Linux Mint 13 ends in 2017. I suppose if you want, you can go that route as Linux Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu. They are similar so anything that works on Ubuntu *should* work on Mint.

Most of them will, however newer games like Pillars of Eternity might require more recent versions. I have a good amount of Linux games on GOG, if you want I can test a few of them for you.

One last thing, you should download Ubuntu 12.04.5 if you're going for a fresh install.

I've read that anything above 12.04.1 will have newer Xorg versions that will conflict with the legacy fglrx driver. So, this could be risky to do if he's looking to install the fglrx driver.

Going to give mint 13 a try and see what happens.

I wish you good luck and hope you find success! I personally am not happy with AMD support on Linux, but you go play games with the hardware you have, not the ones you wish to have. :)

here's some additional resources:
https://dainaccio.wordpress.com/2014/03/26/ati-radeon-hd-4330-fglrx-legacy-driver-on-linux-mintubuntu/
NOTE: This article uses 64-bit drivers. Big No No on your system.

AND:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=Legacy2&os=Linux%20x86
This is the link to the fglrx legacy driver, 13.1. Remember, the last version to support your hardware is 13.1. Do not install drivers that are above this number. AMD's driver or fglrx to install should be clearly labeled on Mint. If in doubt, post back and ask. :)

Thanks for all of your help. :) I mainly started using linux as a sort of back up OS in case anything happened with my windows, but I am enjoying linux despite the problems.

It depends on how they are compiled. I had to upgrade to from 12.04.1 to 14.04 for Don't Starve to work because it was compiled against a newer glibc.

That is good if you're enjoying it. Linux forces you to learn which is never a bad thing. :) Check out the other additional articles. :) It is said that on Linux Mint 13, the legacy drivers should be found on Additional Drivers section. I don't know where that is on Linux Mint, but if it's anything like Ubuntu it should be on settings > Software Sources.

EDIT:
If you want to make sure you installed the right version, you can directly download the fglrx driver from AMD's website.
