Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

Hi everyone,

we've released the 0.7 version a couple of minutes ago, here's the changelog:

- Back/Forward navigation in the Store section
- Import Folder - it is now possible to import a game which is not compatible with the client, by clicking the game in the Library section and choosing ‘Import Folder’ from the More dropdown
- Startup page option - it is now possible to decide if the client should start on LIBRARY page, STORE page, or continue previous session
- Search option - you can press enter in the search field to continue searching in the Store
- Option to Show Game Folder added to MORE menu
- New sidebar sorting options (sort by name)
- External links will now be forwarded to the system browser
- Wishlist option added to the LIBRARY menu
- Community option in the STORE menu
- Forum Replies option in the ACCOUNT menu
- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)
- Improved ‘Last Played’ information, which should now show the time of the user stopped playing the game, rather than started playing the game
- Fixed uninstallation issues on Windows
- Fixed an issue which prevented using Paypal, when buying a game
- Fixed an issue which prevented from displaying Terms and Agreements when registering new account
- Fixed some issues when installing and uninstalling DLCs
- Bugfix: client will now not allow dragging elements onto its window

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

skeletonbow: If you have ever clicked on the link that takes you to the Galaxy alpha page it automatically signs you up just for visiting the page if you're logged in.
avatar
Grargar: Really? That's strange. I visited the alpha page near the beginning of the sign-ups and I got no invitation. I revisited it some days ago and suddenly I got one.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They might have changed it at some point, dunno. It seems to act this way now when I visit it though. :)
Nice client, what I've seen. Easy to configure and use. Light on system resources.

But.... sort by:purchase date (for example) is...skew-whiffed - some games well out of order in that context. Even more, the website library is similarly mis-arranged, and can no longer "reverse" sort by selecting it again, to put oldest titles at top.

Client library is mildly annoying in that clicking between a title, and install, there's no back/forward function. One has to click LIBRARY, scroll down, click game/different game, etc.

Have to scroll all way down library page to get "PAGE x of x" function - perhaps a selector at top of library, too, for those games we KNOW are on another page of the library.

Downloads could use a speed indicator - some seem to be downloading a lot faster than others, and size doesn't seem to be a factor.

Not sure what the Galaxy Helper.exe is, but it seems to use a lot more RAM while client is downloading/installing. Idle, it's very low resource-intensive. And there's only 1 of it, unlike Steam's 3 or more steamwebhelper.exe chewing through RAM like it's Firefox/Chrome.

More later as I play around with it....
Woa.. I had to re-download the client due to a corrupted Galaxy setup.
Come on GOG, an error with 60Mb.
(also, restart after installation?)
Just installed the alpha 0.7.0.860
Tried one game and find that it installed to C:\GOG Games after changing the "install game to" folder to D:\GOG deleted the C: folder and tried to verify/repair -> that re-installs the game in the original folder.

That means you have to close Galaxy than delete the old folder (or maybe move ... I haven't tried) and than it's possible to re-install.

KR
A very, very minor issue with the Galaxy client I just want to report (I feel it's not worth opening a ticket for this one), Star Wars Battlefront II is still marked as "Not Yet Played" despite playing it for like 5-10 minutes this morning. This was imported from the GOG Games folder (installed the traditional GOG installer).

Just want to bring this to attention. If I should submit a ticket, then I'll submit one. Just don't think I need to since this is very very minor, don't want to clutter up the bug report site, and I see GOG staff in the thread.

If it isn't already reported, I would do so. If it isn't logged, it will be lost & it won't get fixed - until someone else reports and logs it - at which point it will be researched, diagnosed, estimated and fixed. Trust me, a documented bug is much preferred, even if it is minor :)

ThePyramidHead: Why not have an offline mode? Not a huge issue.
avatar
Grargar: The reason why there is no need for an offline mode, is because you can use Galaxy to download standalone installers which need no internet connection afterwards.
This and also the fact that the Client is optional and whatever you download with it will work without the Client. Having that said there is actually an option to force the Client to go offline and "downgrade" it into kind of a launcher for already imported / installed games simply by logging off.
avatar
skeletonbow: Depends on what one means by competent developer of course. While I am a Linux centric developer, many devs are Windows centric and their experience is entirely within Windows culture where symlinks etc. technically exist but mainly for UNIX compatibility layer that no general end user will ever know about and many developers are equally unlikely to know about. I wouldn't consider understanding that a measure of competence however. While I would love to think that all experienced competent developers have signficant experience with Linux/UNIX I don't think it would be fair to expect that to be the case at the risk of developer elitism. :)
To me, there's a big difference between prioritising support for rarely used functionality and making bad assumptions which break your software just because you didn't consider a standard Windows feature (Windows symbolic links are useful on their own and are a core part of the default Windows installation, e.g. "C:\Users\All Users" - they're not just part of the now deprecated POSIX layer).

I haven't tried the client yet, but do the shortcuts generated by the installed games launch the client when run? If yes, will there be an option to create galaxy-less shortcuts?
Nope, it's still incompatible with my ancient computer.
Well.. Galaxy, see you next year post-alpha when I'll buy a new PC, hopefully +_+

I have to say that the Galaxy client looks really sleek and elegant, I like it a lot so far.

However - is there an option to disable game updates? I'm using IE Mod for PoE and Galaxy promptly started to download the 'update' which would have broken my modded game (by replacing the files that IE Mod replaces with the original ones). I had to kill it from the Task Manager to avoid that.

For me to use Galaxy, there needs to be a game-specific option to disable auto-updates, just like Steam did it until recently (unfortunately they got rid of that for some reason).

Click on the "More" button then "Configure." You should be able to disable automatic updates there.

Look at the game, click on button more -> configure -> disabled

Thanks, then submitted it goes. I did see one, though this is specifically to an imported game, rather than one installed off of Galaxy directly.

That's... peculiar. I haven't checked anything galaxy related in months, but whatever. I'll just ignore the invite.
