Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: [..]Galaxy is not an app to automatically dump all and every installer / update / goodie to your hard drive and auto-update that backup[..]I'm sure somebody will be able to build such thing
Thanks for the reply but.. uh.. you basically said:
it's possible with Galaxy only if someone mods it.
= it's currently not possible and we won't implement such option T_T

Destro: Can you verify if you see the same issue when visiting https://embed.gog.com/library/windows? Also is the problem gone after restarting the Client?

This should not be happening and so far we had no luck with replicating this issue...

SCPM: In both the Galaxy client and the link that you posted, every 4 or 5 times when I access that page, I either get the 'working circle' or this (see attachment, taken from web browser). Otherwise it works normally.
That is exactly the same for me.

That web page loaded perfectly for me, I opened it several times with a few minutes in between.

My client is still showing the "no results found" thing. Its the same as the one posted, but I'll upload a snip as well if it will help? If not I'll just reboot my whole machine and try again.

oh, and I'm on windows 10, so considering that is TP as well, It is quite possible that is a factor.

phaolo: My dream-idea about Galaxy was like:
1- check new\modified games\bonuses.
2- if needed, download\update their installers in a custom folder.
3- extract optional bonuses to another custom folder.
4- choose and install a game from my downloaded setups.
5- play it.
6- goto 1

Is this impossible, then? : (
That is pretty much exactly what I was expecting as well. It does seem like it will.. almost.. do this. Just not exactly this. which would be perfect. Still, almost perfect is a significant step up from what we have now! ie no client at all! :)

EDIT

Gave it a go now games are showing in the client again.

I was wrong. There is no option to select where the individual downloads go. Will this be added before the official release?

Took me a second to find the installer. It turns up in the directory specified for "extras". I was expecting to see it in "downloads". So the extras folder is the permanent one, the "downloads" directory is only a temp or cashe for the direct galaxy installs.

I installed the game manually, (from the extras directory) but it did not turn up in Galaxy. I expected this, but I couldn't find an option in galaxy to check for the installation, so I just clicked "install". What happened when I did this? Did it check for an install? Did it re-install again over the top of the manual install I just performed, or did it check to see if it was installed first? If it DID re-install, did it install over the internet straight from GOG or did it use the same installer I just used after checking if it was available, and up to date?

If I could make a suggestion, I redeemed my kickstarter hero edition of pillars of eternity on gog. It shows up in my library on the website through a browser but not in the client. I know this is likely because it isnt released yet but it would be cool if I could see the games yet to be released in the client as well and just add the download button to it when it is available.

Also, there was one instance a moment ago when the client said I had zero games in my library. I closed and reopened galaxy and the issue was resolved. Have not been able to replicate it.

Thanks.

Edit: Didn't bother to think the game might not be supported by the alpha version of galaxy. It would seem like a great test game to see how the auto-patching and what have you works since its brand new!

hint, hint ;)

As mentioned in the first post, not all games are currently compatible with the client.

On a side note I am having trouble running NWN diamond from the client. This is what I am seeing when it crashes.

Runtime Error!
Program:E:\Program Files\GOG\NWN Diamond\nwmain.exe

OK then.
I avoided signing up for the Alpha because I don't have much time for testing and wanted to let others who might have that time take the slot. But I'm very curious and a little impatient to see this this done. Any chance of getting an update or progress report? What's working, what's still rough, Beta date, street date?

HeDanny: I'd check myself, but right now Galaxy is refusing to show any of my games. It tells me at the top how many Galaxy ready games I have, but the main part where the shelf / List normally shows is just a spinning "working" circle with the words "No Results found". Sort of like I have searched for something that isn't there, but I didn't do a search. All I did was click the "My Library" tab.

Never seen that before. Might have found a bug. I .. might have just helped!

SCPM: I'm having that issue occasionally as well. Just click on the words 'My Purchases' up top if you can to refresh the page, otherwise close and re-open the client if you can't.
I believe the issue was resolved this morning - if you will encounter it again, please let us know.

I'm still experiencing the same issues, both in the browser and in the client. Every now and then when I access the screen I get the spinning circle, or the view is like the last image I uploaded, or like this (see attachment, from client). It's completely random, sometimes it loads just fine, sometimes not.

Ok, thanks for the info. We'll be investigating.

I get that issue occasionally as well. Is it worth noting that when it happens in Galaxy(at least for me) I can see the menu bar from the browser underneath Galaxy's menu bar? I can use it to get on to the forums or send messages from Galaxy, but I'm guessing that's not supposed to happen, at least not like that?

It also happened on the browse games page, but instead of not loading at all, it loaded with the formatting messed up. I have screenshots if it helps, but I don't know where to upload it.

Can you please post it to http://mantis.gog.com along with the bug report?
