JudasIscariot: Can you get to a terminal screen for now and see if you can install the packages you listed earlier? I am not sure why installing a file needed for libsdl would remove Cinnamon and the rest O.o
avatar
BKGaming: You guys might want to look into this, because it appears to be a problem.

http://www.gog.com/forum/the_witcher_2/libsdl2_issue_breaks_linux_mint_17

By the way I'm on a windows laptop for now.

JMich: From what I recall, Ctrl-Alt-F1 should switch you to a terminal screen. Some of the other function keys may also work.
avatar
BKGaming: That worked, but I'm not sure of all that was broken. I still have the ISO file, I'll just do a re-install I guess.
May I ask whether you copy pasted the libraries from the game card or did you manually write them in terminal?

As for the re-install, as long as you have access to terminal you should be able to re-install Cinnamon without having to do a full re-install.

Let me look for the commands to re-install Cinnamon.

OK, found 'em:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Run those in terminal and you should be back where you started. Let me know if that works.

I think I copied what you posted and pasted it in terminal. But normally I copy them from the game card yes.

I would do this but I'm on a limited net, and I'm sure Cinnamon would be a bigger download. Plus I'm not sure what else was removed that shouldn't have been. A re-install would probably be a better option for me.

I am sorry for that as I am not sure what's going on as I also copy pasted those libraries from the game card.

This is also new to me as I don't expect a library to remove someone's entire desktop manager without so much as a by-your-leave. It's as if the installation of some Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes removed the entire desktop from Windows O.o So once again, I apologize for accidentally having you remove Cinnamon :/

Lol it's fine... I'm not to worried about it. If you could maybe ask someone how to get the libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 without breaking Mint I would appreciate it. Planned to play Mount and Blade today, but might not be now. xD

Do you know if Galaxy will handle this sort of stuff when a Linux build is released? I hope it does.

No problem with this, most of Cinnamon is probably still on your system and it is just the few missing parts that forbids it to run.
You can run the last commands given by Judas without downloading a bunch of stuff. Anyway, most of those packages should be in your package manager cache and will not be re-downloaded.

Once it’s done and you’re back in your original setup, I can help you to install your missing libs *without* killing your desktop environment.
But it will need an effort on your part: reading what apt-get tells you and *not* validating a command if it threatens to remove your desktop environment ;)

That library is listed on the gamecard and if it were the one that breaks Mint we'd hear about it and you wouldn't see it on the card :)

I think we both need to be careful about what we are copying and pasting :)

(as an aside who would name/make such a library that removes a desktop manager out of nowhere AND name it almost the same way to another library????)

It shouldn’t have broken anything in the first place, and the command you gave would have been safe in a sane environment. Obviously something was already wrong with BKGaming setup and your commands just revealed it, they did not *cause* it.

The problem is libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386 is required for libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 and libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386 breaks Mint... so how do I get libsdl2-2.0-0:i386? Others have said it breaks Mint.

I just installed Mint like 2 days ago... it's a clean install. I can assure it not my setup. Others have also reported this issue.

Probably but I just feel more comfortable with a clean install, as I said I just did it like 2 days ago... only missing like 300 MB of updates which I can do again in morning (I get unlimited usage in early morning hours).

I didn’t imply *you* have done something wrong, Mint default setup might already be broken for all I know ;)

Your call ;)
I’m ready to help you to get your game working whatever way you choose to go back to a functional Mint in the first place.

Thank you, and it might be Mint's default setup... but that up to GOG to figure out as they support Mint or for Mint to fix. IDK I just know I can't get it to work like it's suppose to given what I'm given by GOG. :P

Obviously if GOG is telling people to install libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 which needs libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386... and that breaks Mint... then that needs to be looked into.

Yep, and we will look into it tomorrow once you’ve a functional system again.
It might take some time, but you should have libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 *and* cinnamon by the end of the day. I’m used to take care of problems far worse than this one ;)

According to this post http://www.gog.com/forum/the_witcher_2/libsdl2_issue_breaks_linux_mint_17/post3

libSDL2-2.0:i386 requires libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386

libSDL2-2.0-0:i386, which should be listed on the M&B Warband gamecard as such, does not require the Mint breaking libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386

As the user in that post said it's the extra "-0" that makes all the difference :)

So I have Mint running on a CD, and I'm trying to copy Mound & Blade/ Door Kickers to my second hard-drive which is just for storage. It's tell me permission is denied when I try to copy it. Is there a way to do this so I don't have to download these again.

Do you still have the debs?

I'm 99% sure I copied it straight from the game card... okay let me check this then when I get Mint installed again. I missed that in that post. Sorry and thank you. :)

Yep that is what I'm trying to copy to my second hard-drive before I wipe Mint. But it's telling me permission denied when I try to copy.
