BEWARE FOOLISH MORTAL, YOU TRESPASS IN AKALABETH, WORLD OF DOOM!!

Akalabeth: World of Doom, a remarkable piece of gaming history, the grandparent of the computer RPG genre, and a direct predecessor of the landmark Ultima series, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as a gift to the world of gaming from Lord British and GOG.com!

In the year 1979, a teenager - born in Cambridge, England and raised in Houston, Texas - summoned upon this world an idea of unfathomable might. This boy, young Richard Garriot, son of a NASA astronaut, employed the power of his imagination with the creative force bestowed upon him by the Apple II personal computer, and brought a fantasy world of his invention to digital life. Akalabeth: World of Doom, one of the very first computer RPG titles, came to existence. This act of creation sparked an eternal flame that's been burning bright in the hearts of gamers ever since. The flame of love for virtual realms populated with heroes and villains, for stories told by the digital campfires, for dungeons filled with shiny loot and repulsive monsters. The flame of love for computer RPGs!

This historical title laid the groundwork for the Ultima series, the legendary role-playing saga that grew with the computer gaming medium, giving joy, wonderment, and adventure while preaching knightly virtues and the value of imagination to generations of gamers, decade after decade. It's often referred to as Ultima 0, while its creator is now - and shall be forever - known to the gamer folk as Lord British. In 2008 - 29 years after selling the first copy of Akalabeth packed in a ziploc bag complete with photocopied manual - Richard Garriott de Cayeux (as he now calls himself in our mundane dimension) fullfiled one of his life-long dreams and followed his father's footsteps. He visited the International Space Station, becoming the 6th private space-traveler (that we know of) in the history of mankind. Then, soon after the safe landing, he began his pursuit of another dream: to keep alive the legacy of the world he fathered in the form of its spiritual successor, Shroud of the Avatar.

Today - in this day full of wonders - we celebrate both the exceptional man, and his monumental creation. By a special decree from the court of Lord British, Akalabeth: World of Doom shall be henceforth available for FREE to all of the gamer folk, alongside Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire, and Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams (the two spin-offs of the saga). All the remaining title s of the Ultima series are discounted by up to -80% until Friday, December 26, 8.59AM GMT. Rejoice, oh RPG fans! And happy holidays to all!

PS. Once again, this classic release was made possible with the assistance of GOG.com long-time community member and supporter, tfishell, who needs no introduction here, on the GOG forums! Thank you, Tyler, that's another that might have never happened without you!

I will definitely have fun on my old netbook with this one. Thank you very much and Merry Christmas to all of you! : )
THAT is an old one for sure!
I often hesitated to try the Ultima series without beginning with Akalabeth.
So I have now no excuses, only to find the time to play them!

Thanks everyone involved!
Nice little Christmas gift from gog. Thanks! Can't wait to get back home to try it!
Thank you GOG, thank you Lord British.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Edit: And a special thanks goes to tfishell.

G-Doc: I would only note that we weren't kidding about this release being made by a special decree of Lord British :-) We worked with his lordship directly on this one :-D

Gandos: Was the Avatar present as well? He hasn't been the same since he defeated Lord Blackthorn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w59gepTvmc
Well, he did fight the Black Knight later. And the deadly seahorses >shudder<.

I hope Spoony will tackle Worlds of Ultima too one day, and maybe Ultima Online, to make his retrospective truly complete. By far my favourite series of his videos.
Thanks you gog and a merry Christmas to all.
Thanks! It will be interesting to try the progenitor of RPG genre

karnak1: Akalabeth... can't say I saw that coming. A nice slap on those who claim that GOG is no longer about old games anymore.

GOG said that they'd worked directly with Richard Garriot to acquire this. I wonder if we'll see Shroud of the Avatar here when it's launched.
Yeahhr, this is a nice slap, you´re right.
But, anyways, a wall of christmas releases would have been ways better anyways... :(
(the rest of LucasArts for example!) But I think this wasn´t possible for GOG to do, so I don´t blame them!

Anyways: It´s nice to have Akalabeth on here!
Wow! Much thanks to GOG team & Lord British for the Christmas present! Much appreciated! Recently I bought Ultima Underworld I & II and before starting them, i'll make sure I'll play this classic cRPG first! Thanks and Merry Christmas to all fellow GOGers! :D
Thanks for the free game. Looks interesting :-).

And Merry Christmas to everyone here :-).

Question if Lord British ordered this game to be distributed here, Doest that mean that Shroud of the Avatar shalt also be released here as a launch title for GOG Galaxy?

Just watch out for the gremlins that steal your food :P

tinyE: I already have all the Ultima games, can I just go ahead and snag a bunch of others for free instead? :P
Played and beaten? Because if so if I ever revisit the Ultima games I really like to ask you for advice.

Especially in 5 and 6.

(I already beaten 4)

Not even close. I love them but I suck at them.

Which one did you find the hardest because honestly for me Utlima 5 has the hardest first half ever. I really do not where to begin once I arrive in Castle British.
Thank you

Please tell our greetings and thanks to the mighty sovereign. Both thanks for this piece of nostalgia and gaming history but even more for creating the best computer roleplaying game series!

I thought Ultima 5 worked just fine. Ultima 4 was harder, in my memory. But probably that depends on a lot of factors and on luck.
