OK, let me answer something else:

I have no clue what's going on.

To me it just seems like everyone is randomly voting for people without any real reason.

Yeah that's right.

It starts out that way, but as the game goes on we get more information and can start to piece it together.
So we have to pick someone based on flimsy reasoning today, but remember, the mafia are going to be trying to protect each other even now, so patterns will be starting to for already!

as long as we don't let them lurk in the background making funny jokes...

Yes. That's how these games always start. It's called Random Vote Stage. Initially, there is no reason to vote for anyone, but Town has to lynch someone. So we wildly throw votes around - or try to start meaningful discussions like Pookina is doing. And then we all try to judge the reactions of others. How to people react to being voted? How do they react to questions? Does anyone appear especially interested in finding out Power Roles? (scum would want to know who is a Town-Power role)

Still, usually Day 1 ends in a mislynch. But then you can go back to D1 and analyze who drove that mislynch, who made a case against the one who got lynched. Who was only too happy to go along. And so on. Every lynch and every Nightkill gives us information. The goal of the game is to find out enough information to identify the Scum faction, before they kill enough of us to attain control over the votes. (i.e. half the surviving players or more).

Day 1 is the most difficult, since it's the one with the least information.

Well that was kind of my way of not giving a real answer, but I wasn't serious enough to vote.

Still, it's good that you're scrutinising it.
