axelsson: Since my memory is crappy as sh*t I wish GOG would have a feature where I could mark a game as "Owned" if I have bought it somewhere else.
Good idea, what do you guys think?
It's a great idea, and while I'm sure GOG isn't opposed to such an idea in some incarnation or another, truth be told that their limited developer resources will be busy for quite some time working on much larger impact features to the wider user base that I doubt we'll ever see any smaller features geared towards much smaller subsets of the user base such as us. It even makes sense sadly that if you have a finite number of developers, you are best allocating them to the features/functionality that caters to the wider user base for the best bang for the buck impact. The down side is that more niche and individual needs/desires get put off for a longer period of time if not indefinitely being trumped by more important things.
I'd suggest that the best way for us to get features of this nature is to talk to Barefoot and Adalia to try to interest them in adding such functionality to their respective awesome browser add-on scripts that a lot of people use, or alternatively a separate script even. Such solutions are not ideal, as they only work in the web browser(s) and only if someone has them installed, and do not work within Galaxy, but it is a start at least.
Ideally it will be added to the storefront and Galaxy at some point in time as the game catalogue grows and people find it more and more difficult to see relevant things being promoted and GOG struggles to find out how to reduce clutter and find an algorithm to show people more things they're actually likely to buy. That's what Steam has been suffering trying to do for years now and it is improving quite a bit on that front.
I find it quite difficult nowadays to find things I'm personally interested in at the right price point on GOG sales. Partially because the storefront lacks such features to make it easier to find things, and partially because I'm only willing to spend less time now to do so than I was willing to do 2-3 years ago when I bought lots of stuff regularly. 'Tis up to GOG to step up to the challenge of adding more options to the storefront user interface for sorting (by price (ascending+descending), by discount) and more filter options (filter by user given price ranges, by a wide variety of other criteria), and deep filters that allow you to indicate games you're just totally not interested in and would rather never see shown to you again in the store. I think that's where the topic suggestion fits in - not seeing games you already own elsewhere. GOG already can tap into our Steam account data so they could have an option to say "Don't show me promos for games I own on Steam already" at least for people who are linked up through GOG Connect. Even just doing it manually would be nice though.
GOG store tagging and any other options currently available do not meet any of the goals. They do not cause games on sale or otherwise promod to not show up on the storefront etc., and they do not provide GOG with valuable data on what we want to see and what we do not want to see.
This is a problem that can only truly be solved by a gradual evolution of the GOG store algorithms and with the ability for the customer to specify things manually at their option. It may be able to be worked around slightly in a useful way with client-side scripts but just about any solution done by 3rd parties will be a hack at best without store side support, and that's very unlikely to happen IMHO for years at the going rate. :/
