I need no stinking achievements to play a game. Normally I avoid them, only some games make an exception of this - Trine Enchanted Edition for example.

What I've always been attached to is getting 100% completion on a game. I consider that a personal challenge though.

what about games that are unbeatable though ?
like the sims
or racing games
or beat em ups

you can unlock everything but there will always be times and high scores to beat

HereForTheBeer: I don't seek out their completion, but I do get a chuckle out of some of them - so long as the goofiness doesn't break the ambiance of the game. Basically, don't insert silly achievements into an otherwise "serious" game. Imagine something like a "Headsplitter" achievement in the Stalker games.... ugh. "Yay - you killed your 50th Snork!" while you're tense from bumping around in a dark, snork-infested cavern trying to avoid anomalies. Actually, I would dislike them entirely in that sort of title.

Now, a game like Terraria (my current poison) is tailor-made for achievements, because it is built so much on exploration and crafting.
If only there were a game where you could kill Snorks... I hated those things. Such a smurfin' smurf ripoff.
I usually don't take note of achievements but when I do it usually for games that I really like and they do give me motivation to try to explore the entire game and try playing it in new ways.
I don't really pay attention to them, in most cases. I'm not sure what everything we include under the 'achievement' banner though, say for example, the optional mission achievements in Starcraft 2? Those I absolutely chase after.

Noooo, don't mention Mario Cart on the SNES, I still feel the RSI from 20 years ago of trying to get 1 hundredth of a second of laps...

mario kart 64 and ds too
I just play the games, generally I get some achievements while playing the game, but that's all, I'm not a hunter (also I have a job and don't have enough time to focus on that anyways)

Yes, I have the one on the Wii as well, didn't grab me as much though. There's something in the heady days as a teenager (roughly!) drinks and smokes, mario kart all night stints that the newer games didn't seem to capture.

Only if it unlock something I find interesting and that's rare.

Starting games IS a achievement nowadays with all the Early Access and the like.

Achievements sure have ruined game communities though with all talk about them. A game can barely work but what do people complain about the most? Yes it's if one or two achievements aren't working. They need to really lay off the epenis measurements...
There's only one achievement that matters to me and it's called "did I have fun?"

Well said.
I don't really pay attention on achievments, I rarely even look at them. Though at times it's fun to check on what I've been awared achievments, but I don't try to play in the way that I'd get them all. I rarely even bother with in game collectibles, even if they'd unlock stuff like concept art. But again, if I happen to unlock something I do occasionally check them, but I don't have a need to try to unlock everything.

Yeah I need to get myself to start thinking like that again.
I'm an achievement hunter (75% completed on Steam), but when I play the game for the first time, I play the game in my own way. After I finish the game, I try to complete the achievements and if the game has stupid/grind achievements I pass them.

Example of stupid achievement: Hammerwatch on Steam has an achievement called Millionaire. After 60+ hours of playing and finishing the campaigns on medium and hard, I have 300,000 of the 1,000,000 coins needed, after emptying every level.
