They probably had to get bent. I feel like this move cost them some money and it only happened because they were getting desperate. They could have been saving this up as their joker card for situations like this.

It probably has more to do with the fact that they updated it to work on windows 10 and Blizzard couldn't be tossed to do so. I'm very sure GoG wouldn't be doing this to take a loss on it. This doesn't help build their user base. It's only exciting for people who would already be here for the most part.

You could see it as a potential PR move to make up for recent events.

That's pretty unlikely. The amount of work that would've went into contract negotiations and re-engineering the game based on the new settings options point to this likely being in the works for more than a year.

Could have been in work for years but who says they haven't bent themselves to wrap it up and release it? Maybe Blizzard asked them money or a bigger cut to seal the deal and it's only now that they decided to go through with it.
Ars Technica has a nice article on this very news topic. Apparently, they had access to the game for a week already. I like how they go way more in-depth about the release than other articles I've seen elsewhere.

Also, it seems like everyone is saying that Warcraft 1 & 2 are guaranteed to follow at a later time. :)

Ohh boy GOG has a brown tongue and will make a lot of money. Good catch you do you!! ;)
Hellfire was a mod right? Wonder if they couldn've had that. Heard it wasn't a very good 'upgrade' mind you...

No. More like an semi-official expansion pack made by another studio.

EDIT: If my memory is correct, it's distribution rights belonged to Sierra.

It was more like a mod, but it was officially an expansion pack.
