There's no defense against FREE stuff

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten, the witty tower-defense/RPG, has just been delux-ified with a free update that brings HD graphics, new content, and tons of nice tweaks!

So you loved the crazy antics of Azra, as she made her way through the Half-Way World, right? But you have to realise that, however fabulous her adventure was, it didn't look nearly as good as it does nowadays. Oh no sir.

See, the DX update brings a beautified, thoroughly enriched version of the tale that you should definitely discover or even revisit anew. Here are some highlights:

- All new HD graphics
- No more Adobe Air shenanigans
- New Game+ with expanded story content
- Access to Azra's journal right from the start

Those who already own the game, get Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten DX for free. Nostalgics, or people who simply don't want to let go, can choose to keep playing the "legacy" version, although the super-spiffy DX version also allows you to import your saves and continue your adventure in a snap.
What are you waiting for, then?

The star dev of gog is racing ahead even more. Good for him, good for us.
Thanks a lot for this update!
I guess it is time to start a new playthrough... :-)

muntdefems: The Linux version works flawlessly... except that it crashes when trying to get the "Book of Secrets" and "Book of Face" goodies:

xdg-open: unexpected argument '&'
Try 'xdg-open --help' for more information.

muntdefems: Is it a game bug, or something caused by GOG's packaging? Should I contact Lars?
It's trying to open a webpage in a browser, and that might be failing (the DQ2 site and our social media site respectively) -- getting a linux app to call things like <whatever your web browser is> is always a bit fraught with peril for a novice like me :P. You don't have to say "yes" to get the goodies though, you'll still get them if you "argue" with the narrator.

I've been waiting for this! I love the way this remaster was made. The updates explaining how the old art assets were being tweaked to scale to 1080p gave a nice insight into the process. I love the ability to change between new and old graphics for cutscenes and battles independently even though I will be sticking to the new graphics for now. I've started a new save file and everything is working great so far.
That's great that they finally got rid of Adobe Air! But what is the replacement engine?

Yep, I figured as much, but I thought that maybe the error had something to do with GOG modifying the directory structure. If that's not the case then maybe you shouldn't include the ampersand symbol in the xdg-open call. Please try it when you have a minute, and if it works include it in the next update, whenever it cames. It's not like it's a game-breaking bug or anything...

And besides:

I didn't remember that from my playthrough of the original game, cool! :P

PS: Thanks for the quick reply! Much appreciated. :)

Haxe + OpenFL + HaxeFlixel

The original stack was:

ActionScript3 + Flash/AIR + Flixel

If you could file a bug report here I'll make sure to get to it:
http://github.com/larsiusprime/tdrpg-bugs

Also any relevant details like your distribution + windowing system.

(I check the bug tracker every day, GOG forums less often, so that's the best place to put an "official" record for it).

So can all Adobe AIR games be converted to this Haxe/Flixel engine?
I'm really happy with this REAL update, so rare these days!
Now one item is checked (horray, Linux!, gtfo adobe), just waiting for DQ2!
Now I'm gonna replay after some years, thanks Lars! I admire you & cia a lot for being respectful towards DRM-free.
Oooo! Shiny! :-) Props to the Devs!
Only saw this now. Very nice, I had lots of fun with the "legacy" version, looking forward to trying this one out.

Cheers for the (free) update!
Nice!

Aaaaaaaand DQ just went off my un-Flash list and onto my to buy list. Now could you try to talk some sense into Mr. Stern once again? I believe there was a blog post to that effect, but nothing since.
I'm playing right now.

Sh*t, this game is so good.
Thanks GOG and devs. Best tower defense out there (OK joint champion with Defense Grid -- why on earth is that not here??)
