http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-08-25-darkwood-developer-releases-its-own-game-on-pirate-bay

Darkwood developer Acid Wizard Studio spent nearly five years developing its top-down horror game. After only one week on sale, it decided to offer the game up for free on Pirate Bay.

Bit of an odd move, so soon.

No catch, but one request: "Please, please, don't buy it through a key reselling site. By doing that, you're just feeding the cancer that is leeching off this industry."

Mhm, what key reselling site could he possibly be referring to...?

I don't think it's that odd of a move, really, since it's bound to end up there sooner or later. Honestly, I'd have preferred a demo, but this actually piqued my interest. I do like them spooky games. Might actually check it out now, since it looks legit (and would obviously buy later if I enjoy it).
So, possibly not such a bad idea marketing wise.
Same situation as Defender's Quest devs :/
A week or so ago someone posted a plea from a dev that he'd rather people pirate his game than get it through G2A.

Same dev?

Interesting approach. I hope it works out for them. I was a little interested in the game before, but this has really piqued my interest. I'll give it a shot and them a sale sooner or later.
wow, that's pretty interesting!

kudos to them for trying something different! thanks very much for brining it attention!

I actually have been really excited to try this game, but currently don't have the funds to purchase it even though it is something that I wish I had the $15 for so I could buy at full price because I wish to support the developer (whereas most new release games I'm happy to wait 6+ months for a good sale.) I never pirate games (thanks to GOG existing) and so I was content to just wait until some point in the future when I could hopefully get the game, now I have even more incentive to fork over my money at the first opportunity.

DLing it now!
Thanks for sharing! After reading through their little photo story, I've pretty much made up my mind to buy a copy, either now or in the near future. They seem like cool guys, the game looks interesting, and I like how they're taking a clear stance against G2A and similar code reseller scam sites.
I can't express how much I hope this move will work out for them. But I'm confident it will. Once you get into this game, there's no going back. I bought this on release day and have some 17 hours logged into it at the moment. Not since the original Thief and System Shock 2 have I been this terrified playing a game.

I'm calling it now: This will be a revered classic in a few years time. It will end up on a lot of people's "What's the scariest game you've ever played?" lists. Hopefully, this move will speed up the process a little bit and word of mouth about how utterly brilliant and creepy and terrifying this game is will spread like wildfire.
The Pirate Bay is my favorite video game retailer, 100% off sale all the time.

Why does the OP link to a blank page on the Eurogamer site, a page which tries to coerce the user to disable his/her ad blocker so that they can invade his/her browser with their ads? Screw that.

Eurogamer is also the same site that misled its readers by telling them that one of the very best video games ever made, "Mafia: City of Lost Heaven" for PC, is a 4/10. Clearly, that site is cancer and a bane to humanity. It deserves no money or patronage.

Please link to reputable and non-cancerous sites next time.
Very tempting but I would not. I still remember that time I downloaded The Witcher 2 from TPB and CDPR posted in the TPB comments about hoping we enjoy the game and buy it if we can. I now have it legit.

Just check out the other link they posted -- it's arguably better anyway.

And I was able to read the article on the other site, with ad- and script-blockers turned on.
I wonder how many people will buy the game after playing the torrented one .
This move seems to be doing well for sales: https://steamdb.info/app/274520/graphs/ (Check out the graph for Owners and total players)

Edit: Silly me, I should have use SteamSpy: https://steamspy.com/app/274520
