Faster than lasers.

Into the Breach, a mechanized turn-based strategy from the makers of FTL, is coming soon, DRM-free, to GOG.com.

Our timeline is under attack! Hideous alien creatures burrowed under our civilization and the only way to drive them back is by employing giant mechs. From the future!
Fine-tune your formidable machines, plan your every move, and watch your fire - there are still some civilians left in there. If everything else fails, just turn to the future for reinforcements and another chance.

naghihimutuc: If fthere's another topdown roguelike that could top that game in terms of gameplay and lore (I mean it is a roguelike with a story!) then I would love to know what that is.

drealmer7: Sunless Sea

gameplay is totally different as it's not based on a bunch of classes and abilities like standard RPG, but, yes, play this game
I'll get Sunless Sea once I get a decent laptop to run it with, hahaha. But yeah, it's on my radar ! I used to play the browser RPG this game was based on and that was super fun until I found better uses of my time (other games).

I would say prepare to be disappointed.. I really enjoyed Fallen London and was expecting to love Sunless Sea... But it was a bit of a damp squib for me. The more and world is still interesting and fun but the game itself is bloody awful, a really bad example of permadeath.

Basically you end up replaying the same story events over and over because dying is easy and nothing (other than some small location changes) changes in the world between lives.
I don't understand the point of making an article just to tell us that a game exists, this is a games shop not a news site, release the game, give us a pre-order or be silent.

darktjm: My main question is: are the 8x8 fields due to the game being unfinished, or are they all that way? Or is it just a limited view of a larger field?
I believe all the levels are that size (or around that size), so each individual battle is quick.

And it's definitely not a tower defence game, it's a turn based RPG as far as I'm aware.

IAmSinistar: "from the makers of FTL" - don't need much more to sell me on the game than that. But it does look quite good on its own merits too. Onto the watchlist with ye!
Yes indeed, that'll be a day-1, insta-buy for me.

Bui-Tur: I never understood all these hype about FTL, I do own it, played it, and found it wanting. Wanting in almost every part of gameplay. There are dozens of roguelikes and roguelites that are obviously deeper, harder, prettier, funnier - and finally, just better.

So "the game from the makers of FTL" promo slogan does the opposite (i.e. negative) effect for me. Looking at screenshots, I only feel this negative effect becomes stronger.

nummer2: Can you name some? cause im interested to know some good roguelikes. I for myself couldnt find a lot of better games than FTL. Maybe Darkest Dungeon could compete with it. But then its still so that everone has some other taste.
I can highly recommend 'Dungeon of the Endless'. Feels a lot like FTL imo (I can't explain how), but with a heavier focus on tower defense and resource management as a pose to FTL's crew management. It is also a lot more game balanced and there are many more layers to the gameplay I'd argue. Have a look and see if you can pick it up in a sale.
Take my money!
FTL is probably my most gifted game. One of the things I love about it is that the developers released the Advanced Edition as a free upgrade. That's treating your players right!

Breja: Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our pixelated dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a dev
As decent graphics and designs:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the graphics of the NES;
Stiffen the animation, summon up the low res,
Disguise fair nature with rough edges;
Then lend the game a blocky aspect;
Let pry though the porting from mobile
Like Android or iOS; let the crowd play it on the bus
As eagerly as Candy Crush
Makes people's eyes glassy and confound the player base
Swilling cash in wasteful shallow games.
Now forgo the brains and stretch on your couch wide
Hold the strategy and raise the glass with any spirit
To his full height, and pour it on you drunkest gamers.
Whose hard drives are full with indie games brains-proof!

Bui-Tur: ADOM (old and getting better with time passing)
This is a game with such a magic that it showed you an "s" and you just jumped "f*ck!!!"
Long time without checking it. Now a quick check shows that it has even a visual interface, maybe à la Nethack.
Thanks for mentioning it. It might be the time to go die there again :)

Yes, plus it is quite easy to grab and play for a few rounds if you have little time or even a full playthrough (you will die) if you can play for a bit longer.
Makes me think of "Advanced Wars".
PC Gamer posted a video of playing through an early mission with some commentary on how the game mechanics function. It looks fucking ace. I'm really stoked for this. :)

It's nice to know we can expect a particular game will be coming to GoG.
Aww niiiiice. Looks like Advance Wars, but better and made by the FTL guys. I'm sure I'll enjoy this when it arrives.

It's February 27th, why can't I buy it yet?!?!

Steam says 3 more hours until it will be "unlocked":

http://store.steampowered.com/app/590380/Into_the_Breach/

I'm guessing that means it will be purchasable. I couldn't find price info anywhere. I think the system requirements are little too high for the PC I'm using now, so I will probably have to wait to play it.
