Faster than lasers.

Into the Breach, a mechanized turn-based strategy from the makers of FTL, is coming soon, DRM-free, to GOG.com.

Our timeline is under attack! Hideous alien creatures burrowed under our civilization and the only way to drive them back is by employing giant mechs. From the future!
Fine-tune your formidable machines, plan your every move, and watch your fire - there are still some civilians left in there. If everything else fails, just turn to the future for reinforcements and another chance.

low rated
It's a tower defense game. No more mobile shit gog.
What does "soon" mean? There has been no news of this game beyond the initial trailer and screenshots and now it's suddenly coming soon?

Either way I'm glad gog's picked it up.

They may mean GOG's particular version of Soon™ (ref. Crawl).
Unless this game ends up being a total dog, I reckon this will be an instabuy for me. If it has even half the fun, replay value and challenge of FTL it will be a winner. I'm very happy to get this on GoG instead of on Steam. Good news!!

Really? Doesn't look like it to me. Where does it say this?

Unlike others here, "from the makers of FTL" turns me off: I didn't care for FTL. This game seems alright, though. Decent graphics, but given FTL's gameplay, I'd almost need a demo to see if the game is playable.

My main question is: are the 8x8 fields due to the game being unfinished, or are they all that way? Or is it just a limited view of a larger field?
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our pixelated dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a dev
As decent graphics and designs:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the graphics of the NES;
Stiffen the animation, summon up the low res,
Disguise fair nature with rough edges;
Then lend the game a blocky aspect;

Am I the only one who looked at the pic and thought of BT?
sooooo excited
I never understood all these hype about FTL, I do own it, played it, and found it wanting. Wanting in almost every part of gameplay. There are dozens of roguelikes and roguelites that are obviously deeper, harder, prettier, funnier - and finally, just better.

So "the game from the makers of FTL" promo slogan does the opposite (i.e. negative) effect for me. Looking at screenshots, I only feel this negative effect becomes stronger.

Can you name some? cause im interested to know some good roguelikes. I for myself couldnt find a lot of better games than FTL. Maybe Darkest Dungeon could compete with it. But then its still so that everone has some other taste.

I don't play many roguelikes/lites at all, but, there's some worth checking out:

Darkwood (not played but it looks great)
Sunless Sea
Tales of Maj'Eyal

I have played FTL. I found it decent, not close to very good and far from great. I only bothered to play through fully once on normal difficulty. It was also discouraging that I unlocked like 1 thing total in the entirety of playing it and there's apparently a lot to unlock.

I gotta agree. I played FTL, liked it for a few turns then kinda... didn't. Trying to outrun that wave of destruction is kind of annoying; the random events are cool, I like that there are encounters that don't end in a ship-to-ship melee but the panicked pacing is weird especially if you just wanted to explore and experience what else the game had to offer. It's a feeling like someone's breathing at the back of your neck telling you to hurry the fuck up. And yeah, I kind of agree that there's something lacking about FTL. I think it feels too cold? The random events kind of offer you some stuff but it's mostly just sending crew members to repair/kill/evacuate and if they can't then something goes wrong and they might just die.

A lot of people who have experienced Darkest Dungeon would probably say that the relationship they have with the game is complicated. Like me, I have it on my hard disk, and I played it a few months back. I stopped. And I say I'll come back to it or I will uninstall it but I know deep in my heart that I will never do either of those things.

Tales of Maj' Eyal is just glorious. If fthere's another topdown roguelike that could top that game in terms of gameplay and lore (I mean it is a roguelike with a story!) then I would love to know what that is.

Still though, I think I'll enjoy this game. Chunky pixel robots in what seems like bit-size roguelike strategy rounds are my jam. I think.

Sunless Sea

gameplay is totally different as it's not based on a bunch of classes and abilities like standard RPG, but, yes, play this game

It does remind me somwhat of these Kaiju and monster movies. Also a bit of Pacific Rim, haha :)

From what I was impressed with recently (in roguelikes department):

ADOM (old and getting better with time passing)

Dungeonmans (full of charm and humour)

Caves of Qud (under active development)

Cogmind (yet to come but already now looks amazing!)

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space and Infinite Space: Sea of Stars (space roguelikes!)

Hydra Slayer and HyperRogue (two brilliant roguelikes from mighty Zeno)

Approaching Infinity and The Curse of Yendor (two not less brilliant games from Ibology)

Epilogue (maybe my personal favorite roguelike, with amazing visual style and overall atmosphere... but hard as Hell!)

Brogue and Demon's Sword (two amazing roguelikes both using Onyx roguelike tile sets I like much)

Bludgeons and Krakens (game from Cannibal Cat, Demon's Sword creators)

FireTail and The Trapped Heart (games from Darren Grey who have written most of lore for upper-mentioned Tales of Maj'Eyal)

Siralim and Siralim 2 (Euro-Pokemon-RPG-roguelikes from Tylacine Studios)

Hieroglyphika (just try it!)

Sarcia (yet to come but looks charming)

So forget about FTL or Darkest Dungeon... GOG just doesn't know about good roguelikes.
