I assume some of you said that when you read the reviews of a game that you really like and it turns out that most of them are negative.
I said that about Ultima 8 and 9(yes,I like U9) and Privateer 2.
These are not "so bad,it's good",no,the are games I enjoy and would recommend them.
I never said that. I only like popular games.
Resident Evil 6 and Castlevania Lord of Shadows comes under this for me. Bad reputation but are well built, great looking games.
Both Postals.
TR Angel of Darkness (okay I liked some of it which is more than most people).
Kingpin

Those are the 1st few that come to mind.

I agree on the Castlevania game. I enjoyed it.

I liked Resident Evil 4 when it came out. Fans crapped all over it for not being like the previous games, for me it was the other way around. I always thought the first Resident Evil's were hilariously bad in my oppinion, so the change RE4 saw was really great.

Robinson's Requiem. It got very mediocre to bad reviews with only a few magazines calling it good. It was very difficulty , graphically it was really bad and "survival games" were more or less unknown back then in 1994. I liked it a lot though since it was so unique.

Football Glory (Fußball Total here in Germany) from Croteam. Sure, it's just a rip-off of Sensible Soccer and therefor wasn't very popular but i loved the comical additions. Being a woman running on the field naked, a dog chasing the referee or the funny speech bubbles that would pop up after yellow/red cards or injuries, it was entertaining. The CD version also features highly pixelated videos from i guess the croatian league that would play after goals, which was kinda impressive back in 1994.

And basically all of the Suda51 games. I love the guy and his unique approach to games, his downright bizarre and crazy ideas and that he just simply doesn't hold back. From the "it's sexist!" cries of americans about Lollipop Chainsaw and Killer is Dead to the whining about his games not being mainstream uber-polished fast food games (Michigan: Report from Hell for example) the reactions his game bring out alone make me love that guy and i enjoyed nearly all his games so far.
When I was a kid, it was only my mom's review of the first GTA that mattered. I managed to convince her to buy me a game, and she agreed. In my stupid excitement I made the mistake of then telling her what the game was about :P

Off the top of my head I can only think of Doom3. I've read/seen several reviews that were quite scathing, but I really liked it.
I almost didn't buy Runaway 2 because of the mediocre/negative reviews but I'm glad I did play it, had more fun with that game than with Runaway 1 and 3 combined. Runaway 2 is the only game in the series that made me laugh out loud several times, it's a wacky game but definitely the most funny of the trilogy and if you want the nonsensical plot of the Runaway series to make any sense at all, there's no way around the second part. 4 star material to me despite a select few frustratingly obtuse puzzles and annoying animations that you can't skip. For point & click aficionados, the whole series is clearly worth playing and imho an above average experience even if none of the 3 game is a must have classic.

Btw: I enjoyed Ultima 8 and Privateer 2 quite a lot, they're decent games that just don't quite fit with the rest of their respective series so the bulk of negative feedback comes from people comparing them to earlier titles of the series.
I actually feel more nostalgic about Ultima 8 than Ultima 7 because Ultima 8 has that unique dark atmosphere that I found immensely memorable even if the game had some serious flaws and was unfinished (thanks EA)

Ultima 8's criticism came from a lot more than just being so different to all it's predecessors. In it's original release version the game had abysmal jumping controls, a ton of bugs, some even gamebreaking and problems with the story. They released a patch later that fixed most of that and also stopped the moving platforms which made the jumping sequences not smash your keyboard in anger.
But in it's original release version, Ultima 8 was really bad because it was so quickly rushed out to the stores. In the fixed version it's not a bad game and certainly a lot better than Ultima IX
Far Cry 2. To me it is a great GTA-like game in a first-person view. The graphics are very nice, it really immerses you to the gameworld, the action and shooting is very satisfying, I love exploring the maps and driving around etc.

Yet people complain "nyuk nyuk the enemies respawn and weapons break down nyuk nyuk", as if it really mattered. :)

Damn, whenever I mention the game, I get an urge to re-install and replay it. Maybe this time with those realism mods or something (I played it vanilla the last time).

Halo 1 & 2 (PC versions) are another. They are supposed to be such a travesty and a crime to the humankind, especially the PC versions, yet I enjoyed them very much (albeit, yes there were boring copy&paste levels in the first game; but the hilarious and super-exciting racing part at the very end more than made up for it).

Maybe Half-life 2 is about there too, at least it seems to get lots of hate even today. The odd thing is that I used to be one of the people bashing it a long time ago, I guess I saw it as some dumbed down heavily-scripted FPS game, something that I'd complain about Call of Duty games nowadays. When I recently replayed it (along with the Episodes 1-2), I was surprised how much better it felt this time around.

well i kinda like bloodrayne 1 and 2

and shadowgate 64 on the n64
I remember it the other way around - good reviews everywhere when I thought the game was lame.

But I've played several games with rather mediocre metacritic scores that weren't all that bad. Not exactly good either, so maybe the ratings were fair, but we often tend to disregard anything with a score below 70/100 or so, and I still enjoyed these games.

I played the original version with all its problems and I still enjoyed it a lot - minus the jumping part because reloading times were aggravatingly long on my 486. Game breaking bugs and dead ends were common back then, I even managed to run into a dead end in Lands of Lore Throne of Chaos which is a highly rated game, another one of my favorites.

The assessment that Ultima 8 isn't a bad game is for the patched version, naturally.

PS: same goes for Daggerfall and Arcanum, you can't rate those two on their initial release either because both would not possibly qualify as decent games unpatched. With patches, they're cult hits.

I would love to like FarCry 2, but if die, I have to replay 20 minutes of boring driving. That's what killed it for me.

As for other games, I mostly rely on reviews now. If people say it's bad, then it needs to look really amazing and Tallima-specific for me to pick it up and try. There's so many games out there that I generally only play 1) highly reviewed and well-liked, 2) something unique, or 3) something similar to something I've played before.
Personally I always looked at things like this, if I like something, I like it and if someone else doesn't then it doesn't bother me because that is there opinon. I just get bothered when people try and force their opinon on something as though I must agree with it, that whole "oh this is crap and you must hate it too" mindset or the "but I like it and you have to as well". No I have no problem with saying something is bad or good mind you, I just hate when people try and force you to agree with their opinion on it.

Sorry had to get that out. As for stuff that is general disliked that I like? hmm.. I really liked Vagrant story despite people being kinda meh about it, same with the first Nightmare Creatures(seriously where is it GOG?), Powermonger is another one.

But games that are really despised by the general gaming audience that I enjoyed? Ninja by Mastertronics for the Commodore 64. I played and enjoyed the hell out of that game as a kid and still enjoy it even now. Yes it's not the best, the enemies are push overs and the game is simple as hell but I still love it.

Also Ultima 8. I will never say as it is, it's a great game there certainly was a lot of great ideas and I am sure if Origin could of released the planned enhanced CD rom version they planned with would of made the game more in line with what they orginally planned but had to scrap it would of been less polarizing, still what we got wasn't that bad and was enjoyable.
