The DRM-free initiative.

We've always been on a mission to offer you games with no DRM protection whatsoever. Today, we want to start taking things a step further, help out people who bought a retail game with DRM, then ended up stuck with something rather unplayable. We can help you enjoy your favorites once again, and this time around, enjoy them DRM-free!

There are countless retail games out there that don’t work for various reasons: unsupported types of DRM, system incompatibilities, broken features. There's too many too count. Starting today, owners of several retail titles originally sold with DRM can get a digital copy of their game completely free at GOG.com: with no DRM as always, compatible with modern operating systems, and with plenty of goodies to boot.
<span class="bold">Reclaim these games, DRM-FREE:</span>

Editions released worldwide:
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Editions released only in CIS & Russian territories:
-Mount & Blade: Warband
-Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
-Eador: Genesis

To reclaim your game, just use one of the keys that came with your box. You can find more detailed information on the Reclaim your games, DRM-FREE! page to see if your key is compatible and just where to go from there.

This is just the start of something much bigger. We plan to add more titles to the list in the future - it's a long and complicated process that involves negotiating with multiple parties and a scavenger hunt to retrieve forgotten key-databases - but then, we are on a mission here, we'll do whatever it takes.

This is amazing. That was a fantastic surprise. Thank you GOG and GSC.
I reclaimed whole STALKER trilogy! Great day! :D
Hmm, I've got all 3 games on disc, and I managed to redeem the CD keys of both Shadow Of Chernobyl and Clear Sky.

However my Call Of Pripyat doesn't have a CD Key!

I've got the Special Edition of COP which includes a map, art cards, and the soundtrack CD.

On the back of the game manual there's a space for a CD key but nothing is printed there!

I assume the game must install without asking for one or I'd have taken it back to the shop when I originally bought it.

Is this the case for anyone else?

I'm in the UK by the way.

I tried to activate my Dark Souls key. Didn't work. :p

deja65: Guys i found steam cd key for Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl. The game needs to be installed. Wehn you start the game, go to multiplayer and in the top right corner it will say serial or something like that.Hover over with the mouse and whoola. ''Goes downloading Stalker SoC form GOG''
This didn't work for me. I got the key, and it's in the right format (four groups of four characters), but GOG says the key is invalid.

Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat worked, so that's awesome.
Thanks, GOG, this is a great addition!

Maighstir: Your attached image looks like it's a screenshot of Steam, not a box. That might be why the key doesn't work

(Emphasis mine.)

amok: Steam keys do not work, but if the game has a CD key in Steam it works. In Steam CoP and CS have CD keys, but SoC do not. Eador: Genesis also do not have a CD key in Steam.
SoC has a CD Key, but the game needs to installed to find it. It's not on the Steam details page like the others.

You find the key in a network game, or in the registry.
For x86 systems: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\GSC Game World\STALKER-SHOC
For x64 systems: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GSC Game World\STALKER-SHOC
Look for entry: InstallCDKEY

(The game needs to be started one time in order to finalize the install or whatever and make those registry keys appear.)

At least, that's how I got mine to redeem.

jamyskis: You didn't directly suggest doing this, but there are shitstains out there who buy boxed games that aren't inherently linked to accounts, they register the CD key on an online service (e.g. The Witcher 1 & 2, Mass Effect, Spore, Crysis, Prey) and then sell the physical version.
I would not suggest or condone that.

If you read my post again, what I actually suggested was to buy an entirely new copy from a good sale instead of making use of this activation thing, thereby letting physical copies stay within their boxes and prevent the entire issue from arising.
Just remembered that I own retail versions of Star Wars: Empire at War and Forces of corruption :) Can't wait for it to be redemable.

Strijkbout: I have boxed copies of STALKER: SoC and CoP (non Steam) and bought the entire trilogy again when it got on GOG.
I tried to redeem my codes for gift copies but it doesn't let me because I can't redeem what I already own.
Is there a way I can get gift codes for these two games?
avatar
Pheace: Why not use the keys you're trying to enter as a 'gift code'?
Just tried it but I get the same message as with the reclaim page, thanks for trying to help though.

interesting. Will try.

Also going to install Eador:Genesis just to see.
Thanks!

HypersomniacLive: Looks like GOG's expanding what they did with TW1 and TW2, should make a number of people happy.

So, the redemption of retail keys is treated like a "purchase" and is accompanied by an email/ receipt; that's nice.
What about the redemption of GOG gift codes? The wishlist entry has a lot more votes than the unbundling one that was granted allegedly because of high demand.

JudasIscariot: I guess gift codes are treated differently but why, I have no idea, sorry.
avatar
IAmSinistar: Big things afoot indeed. Judas was not being hyperbolic. I applaud this move, GOG.
avatar
JudasIscariot: Oh you thought this was big? How cute :D We've got even bigger things coming :)

(Don't get me wrong I think it's awesome we have this retail redemption thing going on I am just much more excited about another big thing coming up one of these days because reasons :D )
My question is if you add a game I do own a hard copy of to that list, but I already own a GOG version in addition to that retail, can I still redeem my retail copy as a second game code to gift to a friend?
avatar
Telika: Say, Judas, I already had re-bought the STALKERS here, so, I'm redeeming codes for future giveaways.

But the process just shows me the gog code, withouzt adding it to my "gifts" lists, meaning that I have to write it down somewhere else.

So, is it possible to have these codes auto-adding to the gift side of the library when they are not being added to the owned games library ?
Please send that feedback either to Support or the "we are listening to your feedback" thread as this is kind of beyond me :)
Wait a second. So does this mean that I'll be able to reclaim my retail boxed copy of The Witcher any time soon?

From the redeem page:

5. I bought one of the games before you launched this page, can I get a refund?
As usual, we can't offer refunds on account of giveaways or promotions. You can always give your spare key to a friend, and point them to this page.

The first and second Witcher games were always redeemable :)

Ok, ok. Don't want to annoy Support with that. But feedback thread is a good idea.
