Thank you GoG for the game. I am looking forward to checking it.
If you like the freebie so much that you want to support Devs (does Katauri exist and get royalties anymore?) you can buy and play the next (enhanced) campaign of https://www.gog.com/en/game/kings_bounty_crossworlds_goty. Costs 2.3 cr.
Purchased and played KB The Legend earlier this year, fantastic game, highly recommended!

MarkoH01: Not interested in getting roped into receiving any marketing communication from your so called trusted partners (which I don't trust) and getting my privacy settings being changed - you can keep this and future giveaways since I hate such practices with a passion. I am really curious why you don't simply accept your customers wishes for not receiving marketing materials but instead trying to make them accidentally change their settings ... is this the new GOG way?
No, it's been like this always. They tell you upfront exactly what will happen; the only difference recently is that there are two boxes to uncheck instead of one. Oh no, how will we cope. So terrible. The world is ending. And so on. Just go to your settings and uncheck those boxes, takes 3 seconds.

Anyway, cool giveaway. I have the others on GOG, and have this one on Steam from many years ago. Probably won't play it again, but nice to have my collection on GOG complete.
Despite the bugs, with the corrected file are nothing major, I recall having issues with water texture on the game using a AMD GPU at the time (RX 480). The issue could be on my end though, since my system was not "standard" in some regards but will leave the warning here anyways.

The game is still worth playing, most battles are fun once you get to grips with the enemy dificulty. Do not charge any enemy that comes in your way, your army will be slaughtered, choose carefully and enjoy.
Playing Mage is kinda GodMode after half game, if you want challenging battles, go Warrior or Palading or play impossible dificulty.

GOG's most helpful review nailed it pretty much in every aspect, including the title.

Makes one wonder why I have a privacy setting option in the first place if this will be changed automatically no matter what just by claiming a seemingly free game. Also interesting that they added even more partys to give away customer data (the trusted partner addition is pretty new) which is kind of funny given the fact that the typical GOG customer is usually pretty careful with their data. You might think that's no big deal but I see it differently. I prefer the store I buy from to respect my settings instead of trying to make me change them by baiting me with a freebie to change them in the hope I might forget changing them back. It's simply not the honest or respectful way and I really care who I give my money to. No, it is not the end of the world but it is another step of me being disappointed in GOG and their recent business tactics. This is not about the question how much effort it is to check or uncheck some boxes it is about missing respect for the customers settings just to get a few bucks more.

Because GOG tells you exactly what will happen. If they said "Hey, free game!" and did not inform customers what happens when claiming, then yes, that's wrong. But they don't do that. The info isn't buried or hidden or anything. Would I prefer the settings to not be changed at all, sure, but it's such a minor inconvenience I can't get worked up over it. In any case it's a bit late to get outraged now; as I said it's been like this all along.

No, it hasn't. In "ye good old days" GOG used to do these giveaways without requiring signing up for marketing e-mails. It is only in recent years that they started pushing their marketing e-mails extra hard. Which makes no sense to me because anyone who wants the marketing e-mails is certainly already signed up for them at this point. All they are really doing is annoying those who don't want the marketing e-mails by making them go "uncheck some boxes" every single time there is a giveaway (which is sometimes multiple times every major sale), or in the cases of people like me skip these so called giveaways even when they are games we might enjoy.

It hasn't been like this all along. It shouldn't be like this now. Just because it is a minor annoyance and you don't mind it personally doesn't make it right. And if we don't complain, how will they know we are dissatisfied? The squeaky wheel gets the oil as the old saying goes.
No thanks, Keep your vgame

Also, previously when you did sign up for emails it was just GOG's emails. I don't mind that since the 3rd party involved only gets my email for the purpose of sending me GOG's emails, not for building a detailed profile of me for targeted advertising. To quietly change that to sell my address for targeted advertising once everyone is used to it just enabling GOG's emails does not seem like "informed consent" to me. I didn't notice the altered language by the giveaway (because who reads the same notice every time?).

They DID inform me but to be honest, I am quite sure that they only did that because they were legally REQUIRED to do so. Otherwise there's NO explanation why GOG is even doing it this way instead of simply accepting my wishes I chose in my settings. If they treat me as someone who maybe could be fooled into not seeing that they've chenged my settings or someone who might forget to change their settings I don't see any reason to treat them with more respect than they do. Treat your customers as someone who can be tricked into getting advertizement and make a few bucks ... no, I don't think that this is in any form the correct way I want to be treated. I know that my words won't change anything since most people today are seeing it hte way you do - but I still wanted to say them.

You have an unjustifiably high opinion of the typical GOG customer. Back in the day, sure. But in recent years, considering the crowd they've been catering to and how they've alienated what used to be their core customer base? No way...

You are probably right - things have changed quite a bit.
Thanks for the heads up for the third party marketing thing, think I'll just ignore freebies and anything GOG pushes from now on just to be safe, time to add a few more things to my adblocker for this site.
Thank you for "King's Bounty" giveaway! If anyone wants to support Russian developers, you can purchase other games in the series.
