Are you supposed to be able to change the resolution from inside the game, or is there a hack for that? Because my only res options are 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768.

Thanks GOG! It took me a while to get on your website, but finally my DK2 problems have been solved!

They are the only resolutions officially supported. You can get 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 as well by fiddling in the config file, but they screw up the UI.
Well, I downloaded this afte buying it over two years ago. It worked before, now it's not working in game. It stutters so badly I can barely stand it.

Alienware m14x / GeForce 650m / Win8 OR Win7
This game is unplayable for me too, the stuttering is worse on my more powerful machine, I've tried enabling/disabling all the graphics options, setting everything to low with acceleration off. Safe mode is just a nice button which makes the screen flicker.

Main Rig:
Intel Core i7 2600K
16GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 590
Windows 8
FPS roughly 0.25

HTPC:
Intel Core2Quad Q9450
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5700
Windows 8
FPS roughly 1 (in 1024x786, when reduced to 800x600 frame rate increases slightly)

These were both installed using the version 2 installer and when trying to run the patch it says invalid version, since I noticed those who claim it now works are also running win7/8 and used the patch after using the v1 installer, I'm wondering whether its a problem with just the v2 installer?

I've been trying for years to be able to play this again. Can those who've managed to get it up and running pls give their system configurations, I'm on the verge of looking on ebay for an agp motherboard, pentium 4, a voodoo graphics card and a copy of win 98.

Thanks,
ise
Update to above:

After reading:
http://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/windows_8

I tried running the game in 640x480 and it's very smooth and very fast but very low res...

I too can get the game running at the lowest resolution, but it looks pretty bad. If I try to set it any higher, it loads okay and works fine on the menu, but in-game it runs at about 1 FPS and is thus unplayable. I usually need to ALT-TAB in order to quit.
I added -nointmouse to the shortcut . this fixed my slowdown problem while playing
I neither can play above 640 x 480 without excruciating low fps and stuttering. Something's still messed up.
worked for a bit in low res.....laptop ended up shutting down and wouldnt load up had to restart from a restore point......NOT HAPPY with this system at all for a first buy on this site
Just bought DK2 despite remembering it to have even more problems and looking even lousier on modern hardware than DK1 - couldn't resist the current deal.
Really wanted it to fit my widescreen and was a little confused to not even find the config.ini in my DK2 directory.
Searched some and found a quick fix by changing "Screen Height" & "Screen Width" in the registry under:
"HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2730327029-3494198091-3438237321-1000\Software\Bullfrog Productions Ltd\Dungeon Keeper II\Configuration\Video" (this might be somewhat different for you)

Other than this I changed nothing yet and despite that it's basically just a streched version I favor this to the black bars.
Menu texts are missing aswell but I don't mind.

This is ment to be a quick hint for others searching for a fix aswell.
If only there was a way to add some zoom levels (or remove restrictions) I'd really be happy ;)

edit:
seems this has already been made ;)
not quite legal i guess and premade files not available atm but read for yourself...

I don't know if anyone has this problem but when I load it up only half of the screen is showing while the other half is just black. is there a way to fix this?
In a pm conversation I've been having with devilhood about the poor windows 8 performance, we noticed that the current GOG download doesn't use the most recent graphics patch. The latest version of the patch had a new fix especially for the windows 8 performance, and he confirmed that switching to it let the game run at a decent speed at resolutions over 640x480. If anyone else wants to give it a spin, download it from http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/temp/DK2-patch-v4.7z (Just copy the patch.dll in that archive over the one that GOG installs, preferably after backing up the original somewhere safe.)

This isn't anything official, and no-one will support it. It might help performance, or it might make it worse. Or it it might make ponies spontaneously materialize out of your left nostril. You have been warned. (But please take pics if you get the ponies...)
As long as they're only tiny nostril sized ponies. Full size ponies would undoubtedly obliterate the nostril and leave an awful mess!

It is indeed true, Timeslip has saved us sadistic dungeon keepers from the sadistic lack of support for old games in Windows 8. The frame rate is perfectly smooth at 1024x768, with no stutter or dip in performance.
seems there are still issues with Windows XP

Can you please explain what issues you are experiencing? Maybe we'll be able to help you.
