Just try *something* new, guys.
Even the Mario series has some semblance of change. Sadly, this is yet another 3D Ys game... though not as good. The gameplay only really picks up about halfway through, the pacing is terrible - It is very common to pick up items that negate effects that you've only just barely been exposed to; Upgrades come by so quickly that you're nearly maxed on the first spell in merely one hour. The music consists of uninspired elevator-music remixes of the original Ys music with bland MIDI. The story: oh-so-predicable, full of angst, without any personality other than the flat cookie-cutter shapes from the 'Generic Anime Book of Design' (and complete with dull, generic anime portraits, too!) The Ys series hasn't really been a series that evolves. They jumped to 3D with new mechanics, but it took many years to get that far. This game carries the same tropes (and even some animations/boss techniques) wholesale from the other, better, 3D games in the series. And at least Adol is typically mute in his appearances: This dialogue is atrocious enough, but now I have to read the main character either state the obvious or just say any random character's name in an unfortunately common form of terrible dialogue writing. "You said that the medallion is in this tower?" "Feena..." "You really think I can get this key in that room?" "Feena..." "True strength is being with your friends!" "Feena..." Too much is said, and none of it is full of any life: Just regurgitated bile from 'How to pad your content with soulless drivel 101'. The boss battles do slightly make up for the shortcomings of this game: They're fun and mostly unique. Unfortunately, there lacks polish on a few of them as awkward camera transitions and glitchy collision detection has made one or two fights quite the annoyance. All the rest of the dungeoning is pretty much copy/paste from the others 3D Ys games with almost no variation. Ultimately, this installment feels cheap and barely satisfies, like a bland bag of chips.
