You are in control of X-COM: an organization formed by the world's governments to fight the ever-increasing alien menace.

  • Command deadly close-combat battles 
  • Shooting down UFOs is just the beginning: you must then lead a squad of heavily-armed soldiers across different terrains as they investigate the UFO crash site. Tackle the aliens with automatic rifles, rocket launchers, and even tanks in the struggle to retrieve useful technology, weapons or life forms. 
  • Research and manufacture alien technologies 
  • Successful ground assault missions will allow X-COM scientists to analyze alien items. Each new breakthrough brings you a little closer to understanding the technology and culture of the alien races. Once you have sufficient research data on the UFO's superior weapons and crafts, you'll be able to manufacture weapons of equal capability. 
  • Develop a strategy to save the Earth 
  • You must make every crucial decision as you combat the powerful alien forces. But you'll also need to watch the world political situation: governments may be forced into secret pacts with the aliens and then begin to reduce X-COM funding.

A classic that still delivers

Especially with the OpenXCom open source engine, which adds fullscreen support and other QoL improvements like keybindings. I was impressed how much fun this game still is to play even after so many modernized version have been released. Still the GOAT.

Nostalgia? Or it's just that good?

See title: I really don't know if it's one, the other, or both but I love this game. I've always loved this game. And aside from the hallmarks of early 90's RNG such as a tank taking 0 dmg for 4 shots, and straight up dying on the fifth there's nothing to complain about. Besides the abrupt ending. More 90's charm. I've got over 200 hours playtime with this bad boy and that number feels way too low

I haven't played this for 30 years, the gameplay is still good, Microprose did amazing things back then. The graphics and interface are a bit dated of course.

Still great after all those years

I used to play on Amiga computer back in the ancient times. Today the game is still great. Tactical combat, global strategy, human and resource management. Also one other thing that never went away- the fear, when you sneak trough the unknown area. Your soldiers are dying like flies. Every next corner might be a death trap.

One of the best

This has always been such a great balance of long-term planning (bases, research, funding) and dramatic tactics (missions), highly playable, great graphics, music that still holds up, a slowly unravelling mystery with a solid conclusion. One of the best games I've played over many years.
