More Balatan!

Might be my favorite game of the past decade. But... It's largely due to the mods. Vanilla, it's fine, it's an enjoyable enough tactical game, but I actually prefer Enemy Unknown with the Enemy Within expansion. Where X2 shines IMO is with the thousands of available mods that expand on every conceivable element of the game. New enemies, new weapons, new missions, new maps, new game mechanics, and the vast majority of them are really well made -- The modding community for X2 is amazing, and I really appreciate that Firaxis supports and promotes fan projects. I question whether this is truly DRM free because 2K, but I already own the game elsewhere and wouldn't want to redo all the modding I've done on my own game just to check. Highly recommended (but because of mods).

GOAT game but important caveat

First let me addres the title - the game is a goat'd strategy game that you will likely be seen being sold for pennies during sales, but in reality it is pretty much MANDATORY that you also purchase the War of the Chosen expansion for the true XCOM2 experience, which isn't sold for the same deep discount as the base game. So when deciding if you are going to purchase it, keep in mind that you have to add on the price of WotC, and possibly the Reinforment Pack DLC (not mandatory, but adds some nice story ties to the first game, and adds new items and a unit type, though strictly speaking they are mostly overshardowed by whats added in WotC.) As for the game itself, if you enjoyed previous XCOM entries the big question you might have is if this entry was going to try and add more features to bring it closer to the original games or if it builds upon more of Firaxis' take of a XCOM game. XCOM 2 is firmly in the latter, but it does so by so refining, polishing, adding more depth (with WotC...) and addressing the issues of the first game that XCOM 2 truly stands on its own merit, winning over this player who counted himself as an original XCOM fan who thought Firaxis' first XCOM outing was just "good for what it is." If you are new to XCOM, just know that this is a great starting point for one of the most addictive strategy games you're going to play. This is the type of TBS that uses random chance to determine what hits, which I know can be a sticking point for some, though imo planning your strategy around unexpected failure is a feature not a fault of these types of games.

Nice to see, fun to play,

It's kind a interactive combat "simulator" (ok, arcade), very nice and attractive. Despite of some annoying visual problems (like tracing bullets throgh walls, annoying camera and weird advent soldiers cinematics) game looks very good, better than X-COM. We finally encounter snakeman! It's awesome ) Gameplay is brilliant! It's very interesting to explore. Features are easy to learn and fun to use. There are a lot of new original mechanics influencing battle and strategy. First 20-30 hours of game has no repetion in missions, landscapes and abilities. I can rate plot as 3 of 5. Just because it's too pathetic. P.S. I'm a big fan of turn-based tactical games, I've finished Jagged Alliance 2 + 1.13 many times, I've sieged Cydonia many times, I've even finished Terror from the deep and mostly finished Apocalypse. I'm playing Xenonauts a lot. And if I would rate this game from tactical combat perspective I think it's near 1 star, not more. It has just 1 tactic - trigger not more than 1 pack of enemies on turn. Then just solve a little puzzle of 'how to build chain of kills'. That's all folks. To kill 10 enemies you will need 12-15 shots/attacks on 3-4 turns. Comparing to X-Com Apocalypse, when you usually need dozen of turns and hundreds of bullets for every battle... Tactic in new X-COM 1, 2 is a washy shade of former glory. But I accept it and don't consider it as a flaw. X-COM2 is just another game, it can't be compared to it's predecessors. Game plot is not so sci-fi like in original series or Xenonauts, game is not very immersive. It looks like fun cartoons, not serious sci-fi adventure.

Awesome Game in all Respects

It has great storyline and depth of customization with dozens of character abilities and equipment combinations to allow a lot of fun creating your own unique teams of resistance soldiers and no two play throughs will be exactly the same as the maps are procedurally generated using specific guidelines to fit for the given mission and storyline. I love strategy games and this one is definitely a tripple A title!

XCOM2 is what XCOM should have been from the start. No more aliens appearing out of nowhere with no warning, and you have a few more options on how to approach situations even from the start of the campaign. There is even more room for maneuver. Unfortunately, like all Firaxis titles, it is full of gamey mechanics, for example: you have to do research so you can remove weapon mods without destroying them. It is very cool that the weapons have mods and everything, but anything that could be turned into a game mechanic, to make the game look more complex, got turned into a mechanic. In addition, it’s a bit silly that not all soldiers have handguns. XCOM2 the campaign is funneled through the story so it may appear that you don’t have as much agency as you expected. Don’t worry though, the game is full with options and there is plenty to do. The main DLC adds even more and overall the game feels complete and satisfying. Like all XCOM titles, the game is at its best when played in Ironman mode (no “scum saving”). But there are so many game mechanics and things that you could greatly benefit from knowing in advance, not to mention the occasion bug, that pure Ironman might be very time consuming. So maybe a solution to this might be a self-imposed Ironman where you can only load saved games when you encounter new game mechanics. Rating: High ground *Editors' Pick* https://pixelloot.com
