The DLC takes place outside the main open world sandbox and is essentially a series of missions similar to the tutorial scenarios of the base game, just more complex, with a hub area added in for a bit of continuity in between.
The first few missions were ok, but not great. Further in was more of the same with ramped up difficulty.
I ended up missing the sandbox very quickly.
I went to all the trouble to write a detailed long review of why this DLC is bad. Not the 7.00 update, but the Timelines DLC. But wierdly the review did not take and got wiped.
So I'll just say: this is not X4 and definitely not advised for newbies even though the blurb says it is. It's a bad slog of repeat linear play for experience players that tries to kill any spirit you may have. The only reason to play this in the hope of nunlocking the stuff for the Sandbox, that's it.
But there are other ways without going through this toture.
2 stars only. Worst DLC in my humble opinion.
I have saved a copy incase it mysteriously wipes itself again.
DLC DOES WORK.... and x4 foundations is still on GOG...
if you brought the game here it should be in your 'game folder' with the updated version available to download.
The DLC needs to run on X4 foundations with the new update '7'
I 've been playing all night not a glitch, nor a frame drop..
The DLC is not reeaallly my "cup of tea".
This DLC , takes you "out" of that open world game and gives you scenarios with in the same 'x universe' that does not directly affect 'your game play world'.
The x4 universe has a lot of graphic updates with the new updated version '7'..enjoying the new map icons and smoother flow of graphics.
I'm putting up this limited review without checking out the main (sandbox) game first because I wanted to tell fellow Linux players that GOG hasn't yet released that version yet. People deserve to know.
While Egosoft has been very good about supporting Linux with the X series... and X4 in particular, the Linux version of Timelines on GOG is MIA as of 6-22-24. I guess most people wouldn't notice as they play the Windows version, but I primarily play the Linux version and I was very disappointed to see 7.0/Timelines is missing from the download area despite paying for it. Sure I can play the Windows version, and have been... But I was specifically looking for the Linux version.
That said... Yes the Timelines DLC works, but no - you will NOT get Timelines specific content in the base X4 Foundations game. The 7.0 *update* is free, NOT Timelines. I don't know why anyone would think that's the case.
Second... if you don't really care for the Timelines specific game format, you apparently won't get the Timelines specific unlocks in the main sandbox universe. That's annoying if you don't play the game in the manner prescribed in the Timeline missions - in my case I dislike flying fighters because my reflexes aren't anywhere near what they were when I was 20. Thank you arthritis and nerve damage. I usually let the AI handle fighters while directing fleet scale battles from capital ships, or at the very least medium class combat boats (with appropriate AI enhancement mods).
I haven't really tried the 'normal' game yet - the sandbox as I spent time getting frustrated in the Timeline missions first. I have a few pet peeves on the controls and such I haven't had time to check to see if they were fixed yet as the Timelines missions so far have been fighter classes.
If I could award 1/2 stars, I'd probably give 3 1/2 stars, one full star off for GOG not releasing the Linux version, or at least telling people it's not ready yet in a way that's obvious.
I've only played the first 2 sets of missions so far, and it didn't even start out fun and get annoying. It started out un-fun and has just been a terrible experience overall.
IMO the only reason to do the missions is to unlock the ships and sectors. I'd prefer to just pay for those than have to play this to get them, it really is that bad.
