Wing Commander ®: Privateer ™

The source code was released on this, but the thing is that not all of it was released. I played the open-source version of the game and its very glitchy, and requires the user to write in code. This is pretty much how I remember playing it. And it doesn't glitch on certain missions, like in the freeware version. The only marketable difference is that it doesn't say it has the expansion Righteous Fire in it. But according to reviews it does. I think its far worth the 5-6 bucks to buy this and not have the glitches. Oh, and the speech is here, lips move, upgrades show and battle damage to. Not to mention the scenery moves. Playing the freeware version is like looking through a picture viewer with an attack option. This is how i remember it back in the day. Way to go GOG. This will make you wanna get a stick and throttle controls to get the full effect.

Does it include the Righteous Fire expansion now? It says so. But is it? What about the Speech Pack? It is included too?

wasted hours playing this when it came out, wasted even more hours trying to get it to work on anything modern. This was the greatest game in the world at the time, I was in awe at the freedom and expanse of the world. I play Eve online now, which more than satisfies my need for space freedom/piracy, but just the mention of this game brings back a string of memories.

Despite being a Wing Commander fan, I never managed to finished the game when I got it sometime in the 1990's, until now. It's really hard at the start and you need to do a lot of grinding to be able to buy equipement. The graphics are dated, so just being a long haul trucker in space for many hours is not as enjoyable. You don't really feel in space. Combat is fun and similar the other early Wing Commander games. You have generated missions of different types like patrol, cargo run, bounty hunter, defending base and combat. Story is enjoyable, if you don't mind too much the cheezy dialog at times. My biggest problem with it is you mostly have to play a certain way to do it. If you want to be a pirate, the story missions are really tough, since you have the mission's enemies to beat up, plus all the random encounters that are hostile towards you. Still, I really enjoyed the game, but you need close to 100 hours to finish it. It runs well on recent hardware too.

Payed in the early nineties and spend a lot of lifetime in it. It's the best Wing Commander part imho. The graphic is outdated, of course. But it is still at a good shape - aged well. It is well balanced between the need to trade, to patrol Navpoints and fighting. The story is well known, but interesting enough, to playy it over and over again. Old school at it's best.
