This game is, in a word, a masterpiece. Is it as polished as some AAA title that comes and goes without moving you in any way? No. Should you ignore it then? NO. If you in any way, shape or form enjoy GOOD RPG's, you owe it to yourself to play Wasteland 2.
Wasteland 2 in an extremely fun game with significant problems. One of the most significant problems is the quests feel unfinished. It is easy to get lost in quests and some of the quests seem to be incomplete or bugged. They claim to give you freedom to complete them through several different means, but most times you have to complete them is a very specific order in a very specific way or the only way forward is just shooting everything that moves. This of itself would be fine enough if freedom of choice wasn't such an integral part of the game and the consequences of choices flowed naturally and freely. But often every conversation feels like Russian roulette as you are trying to predict what will happen and avoid a magic trigger word that causes everyone to suddenly turn hostile. For example, there is an option to join one faction early in the game and any choice to join them is considered sincere, with no chance to bluff, and you can lose companions, even if it were more beneficial to pretend to join them to destroy them from the inside. Midway through the game you have to pretend to join a faction in order to destroy them from the inside, with no viable option to do anything else. In the game, and especially in character, you have no reason to know what either one expects you to do, and you just have to hope that your plan is one the developers foresaw. On the flip side, I actually care about what happens to the characters in game. I really like combat, though it could definitely been streamlined further. I like the idea of the skills, though they were definitely not implemented ideally. I do have fun playing this game. But the game still has annoyances and they do add up, especially if you are as into roleplaying as I am. Unfortunately, additional playthroughs are more likely to be satisfying than the first since you actually know what is intended. This can be a pro and a con. I give the game a 7/10, which rounds up to 4/5
I gave this game two chances and that's enough!
Using the mouse is totally counterintuitive.
You spend 1/3 of your time looking for quest solutions on the Internet (and believe me - the game must be really ****** ** so that I would reach for walkthroughs). The other 1/3 you watch as the characters run at snail's pace to the other end of the area where it turns out you were meant to be. And the last 1/3 you are trying to feel the atmosphere of the post-apocalyptic world ... but it's not there. I don't know... Maybe it's because the walkthrough didn't help you much and you're at the starting point. Well it's time to run back for another half an hour...
In Fallout 1, 2, or even Fallout Tactics, you immediately felt that the world had died ... It was disturbingly addictive. Here, IMHO, the game has died because, for God's sake, how many times can you ask uncle Google which NPC you should talk to or where to go, because the directions in the mission log are - at least - insufficient.
If you like spending your time thinking what authors idea for that iritating quest was than this might be thing for you. Otherwise, let it go.
I've only had an hour or so every few nights to play this so I haven't got very far, reaching the mid-point of the game though, I believe. So my review will be on the game I've managed to experience so far.
Pro: Nice writing, engaging story, fun character customization, nice world. I loved how the game builds the atmosphere. Eg. it forces you to count your shots, scrounge for ammo and generally keep you just one step from being out. A very "wasteland" feel to that and serves to prevent players from just making everyone in the party an AR specialist.
Con: Irritating camera (would have preferred a fixed point but I get what the dev was trying to show off), NPC portraits are all weirdly assigned. UI is clunky. Nightmarish inventory management (why do things move around after I've arranged things nicely??). Generally a lack of polish which the recent patches seem to aim to address. Also, uneven implementation of the "multiple quest solution" philosophy. Eg, getting the golden spike the sneaky way = good implementation; successfully sneaking past all the hostiles at the start of Prison and feeling triumphant only to walk into a camp full of baddies (albeit through the back door) and having to kill everyone thereafter = what was the point of sneaking around the first half of the area?? The alarm disarming skill also seems to be mostly useless since the alarmed stuff are mostly placed near hostiles; most of the time I had combat triggered anyway cause a hostile pathed into LoS of my guy in the midst of disarming the alarm. Sigh. Also the implementation of combat options for WL2 is pretty bland. Don't get me wrong, I love the cover and ambush system (if we had the APs why can't we ambush more than once though?), but most combat scenarios (especially random encounters) aren't optimized for that. I also miss aimed shots and was hoping for more things in the vein of FO's unarmed skill atks and was sorely disappointed.
Despite the minor cons would still recommend it though!
