Just starting it, but works great on win10(not a single error for 2hours now) . It is a gem, and so happy I can play it again. It is a classic game, sure the graphics is from 1995, but the story is still fun. Interface is a bit old too, so you really have to be quick with the mouse, no pause to ponder the map or similar, but that was the way it was played so if you liked it before, grab it. If you are new to it, you will find it confusing and hard. But to old gamers, this gem works perfectly.
First of all: the game works just fine on my laptop with Win 10 64-bit
Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is an early 3D real-time tactics game.
It has clunky interface and is sometimes unfairly hard, but there are few things that make it a great experience:
1. The world: If you're a fan of Warhammer or just getting into it, you are presented with quite impressive world building. Campaign is story driven, features quite a bit of dialogue between numerous characters (Humans, Dwarfs, Elves). Everyone acts to fulfill their own objectives. The game has also a charm of 4-5th editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. You won't see that style anywhere else now. There are even some cameos of characters known from army books :D
2. The mechanics: This game takes it's mechanics straight from the WFB tabletop and as far as I know, it's the closest translation yet (along with it's sequel, Dark Omen). Units have different stats, like weapon skill, ballistic skill, toughtness or leadership which determine their usefulness in battle. Results of combat are determined by simulated dice rolls based on these parameters. Sometimes it might seem a little bit too random, but that's also the charm of the tabletop game.
3. The challenge: This game gets brutally difficult at times. You will often face enemy with much more and/or stronger regiments and so you must develop tactics that will help you deal with that troublesome situation. It most often require smart use of artillery and wizard(s) which (when leveled up are among most powerful units in game). I'm not that much of a strategist, got my ass handed to me numerous times and progressed only after reading guides on GameFAQs, but finally beating some missions after n-th try gave me a great deal of satisfaction.
If you don't mind outdated, barely-3D graphics, clunky interface and like to face a real tactical challenge, buy it! :D
Doesn't work. I was incredibly excited to play this game given how well received it was, but I can't get past the battle loading screen. I feel like a schmuck for buying it at full price.
Works almost perfect for me. Was waiting to play this game again for such a long time. Game is hard and controls some what rugged but beside that totally perfect.
