Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat

I keep coming back to this game, every few years I play it a whole bunch. Still one of my favs!

The concept is interesting. The story is interesting. But due to low resolution and the way controls are implemented, battle management is a nightmare. Too many clicks to order an action that should be done quick. Like, to make archer shoot: click archer unit, click attack button, click shoot button, click target. And try not to click a wrong unit, since your archers would happily shoot their comrades if clicked at (wouldn't be an issue if a minimap had higher resolution). For magic it's even more clicks. Battlefield zoom level is insufficient. Moving camera around the map is a clumsy pain. After about 8 missions I got tired of fighting with controls. I think I'll wait for a remaster to be relesed.

This is a very old game. It has none of the quality of life features you want. You will fight the controls. You will ask why the hell the developer did that. Dark Omen is bad enough, but this is far far worse in terms of playabily. It also probably won't run. Only buy this if you want a challenge and are cool with a fight against the controls. I played this in 90s. I like it. The story is pretty great for a GW game set in the old world. I wish they would remake it. It's more of a curiosity than anything else.

I made a full let's play of this game. in a nutshell you basically roll a dice to see if you can proceed to the next level. In a not so nutshell: You take your mercenaries into battle, you fight greenskins and skavens, you squint your eyes for secret items, you manage your casualties and roster. Branching paths, not many, one in the early game that can lead to some interesting missions and allies(which you get anyway but later). Granted most branching paths are just optional missions. Very difficult game that requires you to play a battle a couple of time to learn the flow of enemy reinforcements. This is absolutely great if not for one thing....everything is a random dice roll and if you take unknowingly too many casualties you have to restart the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN should you accept the victory. Every battle is a random event where even if you execute it perfectly a bunch of stickers can wipe out multiple regiments because of dice rolls, dice rolls everywhere. You would think your top tier armor cavalry(not the starting one) can survive at least one volley of arrows...nope! dice rolls!! because dice rolls were a thing of the 90s, you gotta have dice rolls in "vidjeogaimes" This, Fantasy general and every SSI game aside from sword of aragon(best game ever made) suffers from this problem, dice rolls.
