Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat

I honestly didn't even think it would run on my pc, but it did- and oh god is it good. It's a must have for any rts fan- and it's not just the nostalgia talking, since I haven't played this game when it first came out. It's difficult, yes, but very rewarding. I love it.

Game is nearly perfect. Fight mechanics which are based on dice rolls are really bad idea. One mission i have played 15 times (10 times using the same tactic) and each time it was loose or win with too many loses. On 16th couple of crucial rolls went better for me and I have won it with nearly NO loses. Maybe if pause would be "active pause" during which orders may be assigned it would be better. This game is hardcore and, I think, for people who likes pain ;)

Found in forum. Helped for me, and I think that it's the cure for the problem. Also it answers why problem persists randomly. "Found an easy way to figure out what program is currently causing an issue (since it seems to be different for different people). When the game freezes, don't kill the process. Open the task manager and go to the "Details" tab. Scroll down to WHSHR.EXE, right click it and click "Analyze wait chain". A window will pop up with the culprit that's causing the game to stop. I'm on Windows 10, and I don't remember if older task managers have the same option, but this is what I did. Funny thing, the game is still alive at this point, and brings up the battlefield immediately if you stop the other process instead."

The game loads fine, looks great and sounds great. But the controls make this game completely unplayable. simple actions like turning the camera round or moving a unit is so difficult it becomes frustrating. this is one of my favorite all time games and honestly i think ill just find a copy from playstation 1 and boot up the old ps3 and have a good time instead of messing around with this. unless someone can point me in the direction of a mod that will let my mouse and keyboard work like they should i wont be playing anymore.

One of the first serious PC games I remember playing, and easily one of the hardest games I have EVER had the pleasure of beating. Regular saves pre-battle / pre-move / pre-decision are an absolute must as the game will remorselessly leave you crippled after a bad battle result. Lost a main hero? Too bad - they're gone for good. Got your Bright wizard to a fantastically high level but he's been instantly flattened by a cannonball? Too bad. Gone. Several branches in the fairly simple but epic storyline and most of them completely depend on player choices. Stay to help the dwarves defend their city from Skaven? You could lose a lot of troops but victory will gain money and a dwarf unit ready to join the ranks. Move on and leave them to it and you may well just get ambushed by the same army and face a much harder fight. Literally every good choice or strategic blunder in battle could influence your chance of having ANY hope of victory in the final battle. I think I got to the end 4 times out of 9 playthroughs and only won once, it was to difficult. Prepare for the most RSI in your index finger ever as you frantically whack the boost morale button during each combat. Tiring, tense, and highly re-playable.
