This is a good all around aRPG. The animations are smooth and controls are responsive. I like the voice acting and the overall sound design is great. Its not as technical as Grim Dawn as in there isn't as many stats to manipulate, but still the loot is decent. Only negatives are you cant control the camera, but it doesn't take away from the game. I also noticed that if you pause the game after awhile my graphics card fan ramps up. Just something to be aware of. If its on sale definitely buy.
PROS:
+ best looking ARPG so far (yes better than WOLCEN!)
+ nails Gothic art style and atmosphere
+ skill system well balanced without being overkill (as in PATH OF EXILE)
+ class skills and combat are fun
+ pacing is superb
CONS:
- voice acting is atrocious
- randomly generated labyrinths
- extremely repetitve (each act only has 2 dungeon tiles and sends you into the same dungeon 5 times per act). lacks variety
- only a handful of monster types which just get slightly reskinned in later acts
- Hub world maneuvering tedious
- story is rather bland and lacks innovation (good vs evil cultists)
- suffers from "ARPG Syndrome" (repetition) slightly more than other games of the genre
BOTTOM LINE:
Buy at a discount (at least 50%). If you haven't played GRIM DAWN yet buy that one instead (it's much better). I like WARHAMMER CHAOSBANE but only in small dosages with long breaks inbetween for the lack of enemy and environmental variety.
Go here, kill... return... go there... kill, return.. etc. Over and over. You also have the same scenery/locations used, many times over. If you're not expecting much from a game, you might enjoy spending time with this type game.
I've played hack and slash games that manage to involve the player in the happenings of the story. This falls short. Way short.
Honestly feel, except for all the loot choices, it doesn't have much to offer.
Let's not forget to mention... NO SAVES....except when you leave the game. If you have to stop for any reason, you won't start where you left off... Oh no... you get to repeat the same, uninteresting level... all over again, from the start.
What genius developer ... thought of that one.
It does have tons of loot, and some character building. But, with the level cap and amount of points given, you'll be limited on how much you can "grow" your character.
Level cap is 50.. Played till level 31 and the 2nd act. Didn't finish the game. After the 1st few hours I found it uninteresting and boring. Kept going hoping it'd get better... Nope.....
No story to speak of... nothing to really keep you interested or looking forward to the next play session, cause if you've played for a few hours, you'll know exactly what to expect. What you'll be seeing and what you'll be doing.
Mindless killing, and uninteresting locations.
You can play several character choices... but, even with build changes, and skill trees, they'll do the same thing and I see NO.... replay value.
All too many developers put a few RPG elements into a game, and think it's OK to refer to the game as an RPG, when it's really just a hack and slash game... and in this case, sans a good story or interesting character development. Or scenery either.
Got on sale...even with that, it was not money, well spent. Regret what money and time I did spend.
No, this is not Diablo! It´s a "light" Hack´n`slay in a positive way of sense.
Pros:
- Nice artstyle and graphical look
- good "heavy" sounds (especially with surroundspeaker or headphones)
- really nice pace!
- massive fights with great feeling of impacts
- interesting tactical skillsystem
Cons:
- copy and paste environment
- just a few different enemys...
- ...same with the look of items
- only a few traits
most important: I have lots of fun!
I'll say it out the gate: I feel this game has been judged too harshly.
I am a Warhammer Fantasy fan and all too often we have to contend with half baked garbage, and with a 3 star average rating this game is supposedly on par with vastly inferior contemporaries.
What you get here is a solid ARPG experience set in a beautiful rendition of the Warhammer Fantasy setting. Environments are lovingly put together, everything from the epic hub level, to the desolate dunes and temples of the Tomb Kings expansion.
As for gameplay, there is an effective ARPG loop that is addictive in a good way. And mechanically, it tries to be different and succeeds, while not being overly ambitious. You get 5 classes in the base game, and while I have preferences I wouldn't say any one is neglected.
The most glaring flaw of this game was voice acting and plot, and well the plot is good enough certainly not worse than Vermintide (another favorite of mine). But the voice acting WAS bad, it has since been rectified.
For the ARPG fan, maybe look else where, I'm sorry but you will not have your expectations met.
For Warhammer fans, this is worth taking a look at and you may end up loving it as I have.
