Mechanically sound but unsatisfying.
Writing and quests are terrible. It's the space marine ending except you're defending multiple cities against neutral unit whack a mole for easily an hour. It's not engaging at all and just unpleasant. And the writing ins't enjoyable and feels out of character, a departure from the other factions. Faction feels unique. Unity could stand the have numbers given - how much loyalty do I lose for having a second barracks? A second farm? A third farm? Even the loyalty producing buildings take a penalty but it isn't clear what it is, just what you're currently taking/gaining. AI cannot deal with (freely summoned) drones and almost always shoots them first allowing for massive cheese. It's also $15 which is expensive. It's not as bad as civ 5 since factions are much more unique, but $15 on a $40 game is excessive. Overcharge is completely useless on almost everything except pathfinders (as they only have one attack but multiple models). It reduces your attacks from many to one in exchange for a mild damage boost, so for any heavy ion weapons (cities, battlesuits, etc). I there is not one situation where dealing 1-2 extra damage is worth losing multiple attacks, it's always a net loss. The units and mechanics all feel very tau, though, and line up with my expectations and a tau tabletop player aside from the above.
