Vangers

I found Vangers when I was 13 in a $2 game bin at Menards. I expected it to be something horrible I played once and never touched again. This game has stuck with me ever since. It has a unique mix of racing and rpg elements that is, most importantly, fun. Not fun for "hours", but for years. That said, it's hard. The tanks handle like tanks, and the terrain wants ATVs. It's frustrating and demands your focus, and your patience. You scream at your screen and want to break the damn thing, but you keep playing because, face it, this game is fun. And that's what games are for.

This game is one of those that you will never forget, it may seem simple enough but it has a steep learning curve. I would not pick this up if you are easily frustrated. Fun storyline, I wouldn't take it too seriously but it helps set the scene. I'm honestly not too sure what it is but I've never played a driving game that I enjoyed as much as Vangers although I will concede that it is certainly not for everyone. The gameplay will have you fumbling for control of your vehicle as you accidentally overshoot and end up trying to get out of a river for 10 min but once you master the controls it is truly rewarding. Combat can be brutal if even the most basic enemies catch you off guard. There are 1 or 2 pretty crazy secrets to find in this game including hidden worlds which you will need to make very specific vehicles to be able to explore properly, I'm not going to spoil it but some of these are pretty damn crazy.

The game is great in its weirdness, with its own unique universe and terminology. The creatures look like no one else; however, you can recognize silly and senseless principles they follow through all their lives, and this always reminds that they come from our human race. There's a lot of stuff to explore. Despite having a certain aim, you feel completely free to do whatever you want, getting rewarded, punished or astonished. The universe also has its own secrets which are not documented anywhere. For instance, if you steal something valuable from your counselor, a killer will be sent to reclaim what you took without any explicit notice. Sometimes, you may become that killer. Lots of ways to fulfill yourself as a vanger bring you the feeling of a small second life in the distant future.

Simply the best game ever made... For those who like freedom, post-apocalypsis, unique experiences, crazy music, and feel non-standard overall. You may be able to find nuances and shortcomings in the game, but where it hits - it hits as hard no other game out there. This is the game where AI can get ahead of you in the quest line, where future went so crazy you can't tell the difference with fantasy, where there are secrets yielding arcane power and endless possibilities.
