I've had this game for a while now and I must tell you, I frikin' love it.
It blends exploration, RPG, humour and tactical combat in a very nice way and is a blast to play. Other old-school elements involve having to make notes on the map, to have even the foggiest idea of where you should be going.
Many boss encounters also await you, each of them pretty epic in its own right. Giant worms? Check. Even bigger dragon? Check.
Truth be told, at such a price, the game is practically a steal and I heartily recommend it to any fan of RPGs.
This is a metroidvania game, but quite a good one in that regard. The gameplay is spot on. Awesome exploration and character development. The only flaw is that the humour is not so good, as it mostly consists on dropping references everywhere, which may not be the cup of tea for everyone.
In spite of that, the game is worth playing. I couldn't stop playing it myself after buying it. So, go ahead and get it!!
This game is a real RPG, disguised as a platform game. You may say it's a light RPG, but the ending is really hard, and some bosses are hard too, so 'light' falls out of place. You need strategy more than ability to jump around like in most platform games (you need also that, to a certain extent), and this is what makes it an RPG for me. It has some faults: humor is overall funny, if you aren't too puritan, sometimes even great, but sometimes a bit too schoolboyish. Some parts are frustrating for the time you lose without being able to do anything (like those monsters that cause slippery hands). Bosses are extremely well thought, gameplay is very balanced. Finally the game is very long (it took me more than a week to complete it), maybe even too long for somebody, but better too long than too short in these cases! And the ending is one of the best I've ever seen in any game. I read a lot of people are bothered by the kind of humor, at first I was perplexed too, but the writing is overall good, and it gets better as the game progresses. It's a refreshing change from all those games that take themselves too seriously but haven't much to say in the end (zombies and vampires all over the place). The game is much more epic than most 'epic' games you'll find out there, because it's hard. And.. it's original. There are tons of original ideas (leeches..), many more than you'll find in most games of the last 5 years put together.
This game is a blend of Metroidvania, RPG and humor that can only be found in an indie game. Established publishers would have the developer remove the tongue-in-cheek humor for sure. But that's a part of what I love in this game.
Gameplay-wise it's pretty solid. You get a decent arsenal of weapons, armors, potions and items as well as ingredients, so you never feel unrewarded when you're grinding away.
The graphics are really nicely pixeled, so for an indie game it's really good. Also I love pixeled 2d art, so consider yourself warned that I might be a bit biased.
Alltogether I can't find a single point why one shouldn't buy this game, maybe except one: if you don't like Metroidvania games or Action-RPGs in general this one won't convince you. Or maybe it will. ;)
one of the best metroidvania around, funny and clever dialogues, good gameplay and simple but charming graphics. The only gripe I have is probably with the game controls, that are quite bad (not in responsiveness quite in their setup, too many buttons to make simple stuff), I suggest you to use joy2key or XPadder, because it also lacks proper gamepad support
